# Security Fixes - Implementation Progress
**Date**: 2025-10-23
**Status**: Phase 1 Complete (Critical fixes), Phase 2 In Progress
---
## ✅ COMPLETED FIXES
### Phase 1: Critical & High Priority (COMPLETE)
#### 1. ✅ Alert #22 (CRITICAL) - Improper Code Sanitization
**File**: `src/reasoning/TestTemplateCreator.ts`
**Status**: **FIXED**
**Changes Made**:
- Created `src/utils/SecureValidation.ts` - Secure validation utility (300+ lines)
- Updated `src/types/pattern.types.ts` - New ValidationRule interface with ValidationConfig
- Fixed `TestTemplateCreator.ts:245` - Replaced string-based validators with secure config
- Fixed `TestTemplateCreator.ts:521` - Removed `eval()`, now uses `SecureValidation.validate()`
**Before (VULNERABLE)**:
```typescript
validator: `(params) => ${JSON.stringify(params...)}.every(...)`
const validator = eval(rule.validator); // DANGER!
```
**After (SECURE)**:
```typescript
config: { requiredParams: ['name', 'age'] }
const result = SecureValidation.validate(rule.config, params); // Safe!
```
**Verification**: Build successful ✓
---
#### 2. ✅ Alert #21 (HIGH) - Prototype Pollution
**File**: `src/cli/commands/config/set.ts:124`
**Status**: **FIXED**
**Changes Made**:
- Added prototype pollution guards (`__proto__`, `constructor`, `prototype`)
- Replaced direct property assignment with `Object.defineProperty()`
- Added `hasOwnProperty` checks
- Used `Object.create(null)` for intermediate objects
**Before (VULNERABLE)**:
```typescript
current[finalKey] = value; // Allows __proto__ pollution
```
**After (SECURE)**:
```typescript
// Validate keys
if (dangerousKeys.includes(key)) {
throw new Error('Prototype pollution attempt detected');
}
// Safe assignment
Object.defineProperty(current, finalKey, {
value: value,
writable: true,
enumerable: true,
configurable: true
});
```
**Verification**: Build successful ✓
---
### Phase 2: Medium Priority (IN PROGRESS)
#### 3. ✅ SecureRandom Utility Created
**File**: `src/utils/SecureRandom.ts` (NEW)
**Status**: **COMPLETE**
**Features**:
- `generateId()` - Cryptographically secure IDs
- `randomInt(min, max)` - Secure random integers
- `randomFloat()` - Secure random floats (0.0-1.0)
- `uuid()` - RFC4122 v4 UUIDs
- `randomString()` - Custom alphabet strings
- `randomBoolean()` - With bias support
- `shuffle()` - Fisher-Yates with secure random
- `choice()` / `sample()` - Array sampling
- `bytes()` - Raw random bytes
**Usage**:
```typescript
import { SecureRandom } from '../utils/SecureRandom';
// Replace: Math.random()
// With: SecureRandom.randomFloat()
// Replace: Math.random() * 100
// With: SecureRandom.randomInt(0, 100)
// Replace: Math.random().toString(36).substring(7)
// With: SecureRandom.generateId()
```
---
## 🔄 REMAINING FIXES
### Phase 2: Insecure Randomness (13 files)

2. `src/mcp/handlers/quality-analyze.ts:322`
3. `src/mcp/handlers/quality-analyze.ts:288`
4. `src/mcp/handlers/quality/quality-policy-check.ts:252`
5. `src/mcp/handlers/quality/quality-validate-metrics.ts:209`
6. `src/mcp/handlers/quality/quality-policy-check.ts:188`
7. `src/mcp/handlers/quality/quality-validate-metrics.ts:132`
8. `src/mcp/handlers/quality/quality-risk-assess.ts:200`
9. `src/mcp/handlers/quality/quality-risk-assess.ts:134`

**Batch Fix Script**:
```bash
# Find and preview all Math.random() usage
grep -rn "Math\.random()" src/mcp/
# Apply replacements:
# 1. Add import at top of each file:
import { SecureRandom } from '../../utils/SecureRandom';
# 2. Replace patterns:
# Math.random() -> SecureRandom.randomFloat()
# Math.random() * N -> SecureRandom.randomInt(0, N)
# Math.random().toString(36).substring(7) -> SecureRandom.generateId(8)
```
**Estimated Time**: 1-2 hours
---
### Phase 3: Shell Command Injection (4 files)
#### Alerts #14-17: Fix Command Injection
**Files to Fix**:
1. `tests/test-claude-md-update.js:30`
2. `tests/test-claude-md-update.js:73`
3. `tests/test-claude-md-update.js:94`
4. `security/secure-command-executor.js:128`
**Fix Pattern**:
```typescript
import { execFile } from 'child_process';
import { promisify } from 'util';
import path from 'path';
const execFileAsync = promisify(execFile);
// BEFORE (vulnerable):
exec(`cat ${userPath}`);
// AFTER (secure):
async function safeCat(filePath: string) {
// 1. Validate path
const allowedDir = '/workspaces/agentic-qe-cf';
const resolved = path.resolve(filePath);
if (!resolved.startsWith(allowedDir)) {
throw new Error('Path outside allowed directory');
}
// 2. Check for shell metacharacters
if (/[;&|`$<>(){}[\]!]/.test(path.basename(resolved))) {
throw new Error('Invalid characters in path');
}
// 3. Use execFile (no shell)
const { stdout } = await execFileAsync('cat', [resolved]);
return stdout;
}
// OR BETTER: Use fs instead of shell
import { readFile } from 'fs/promises';
const content = await readFile(filePath, 'utf-8');
```
**Estimated Time**: 2-3 hours
---
### Phase 3: Incomplete Sanitization (3 files)
#### Alerts #18-20: Fix Sanitization

2. `tests/performance-benchmark.ts:809` - Backslash escaping
3. `tests/agents/DeploymentReadinessAgent.test.ts:36` - Replace all occurrences
**Fix Pattern**:
```typescript
// Alert #18, #19 - Backslash escaping
// BEFORE:
const sanitized = input.replace(/\\/g, '');
// AFTER:
const sanitized = input.replace(/\\\\/g, '\\\\');
// OR use validator library
// Alert #20 - Replace all occurrences
// BEFORE:
const cleaned = str.replace('*', ''); // Only first
// AFTER:
const cleaned = str.replace(/\*/g, ''); // Global flag
// OR:
const cleaned = str.replaceAll('*', ''); // Modern JS
```
**Estimated Time**: 30 minutes
---
### Phase 3: Dependency Update
#### Alert #1 (Dependabot) - validator.js CVE
**Package**: `validator <= 13.15.15`
**CVE**: CVE-2025-56200
**Fix**:
```bash
# Check current version
npm list validator
# Update to latest
npm update validator
# Or if no patch available, use alternative:
function isValidURL(urlString: string): boolean {
try {
const url = new URL(urlString);
return ['http:', 'https:'].includes(url.protocol);
} catch {
return false;
}
}
```
**Estimated Time**: 15 minutes
