WHY THIS EXISTS:

The .NET SDK does NOT honor <EmbedInteropTypes>true</EmbedInteropTypes> metadata when the interop

assembly is supplied through a <PackageReference>. NuGet resolves Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel as a

plain runtime asset (AssetType=runtime, CopyLocal=true), so the compiler receives it via /reference:

(a normal reference) instead of /link: (embed). The result is that the Excel types are NOT embedded and
|
|
the assembly takes a hard runtime dependency on office.dll (Microsoft.Office.Core) and
|
|
Microsoft.Vbe.Interop.dll, neither of which is deployed with a self-contained .NET app. Loading the Excel
|
|
interfaces at runtime then throws FileNotFoundException for 'office, Version=16.0.0.0'.
|
|
|
|
WHAT THIS DOES:
|
|
After ResolveAssemblyReferences computes the reference set, this target flips the Excel PIA reference to
|
|
EmbedInteropTypes=true so the compiler links (/link) the used interop types directly into THIS assembly.
|
|
The compiler embeds only the Excel interop types actually used (and any Office.Core types they require —
|
|
in practice zero, because AutomationSecurity is reached only via late-bound IDispatch). This removes the
|
|
runtime dependency on office.dll entirely, so no assembly-resolve shim is needed in prod or tests.

This applies uniformly to every project that resolves the Excel PIA (directly or transitively), keeping
|
|
embedding consistent across ComInterop, Core, McpServer, CLI, and the test projects.
