* fix: move ARM64-only ruvector packages to optionalDependencies

Fixes CI failures caused by platform-specific dependencies:
- @ruvector/node-linux-arm64-gnu (ARM64 only)
- ruvector-core-linux-arm64-gnu (ARM64 only)

These packages caused npm ci to fail on x64 CI runners with:
"EBADPLATFORM - wanted linux/arm64, current linux/x64"

Solution: Move ARM64 packages to optionalDependencies and add
x64 variants for cross-platform compatibility.

Stream D: SwarmOptimizer Implementation

Status: ✅ Complete Location: /workspaces/agentic-qe-cf/src/core/optimization/ Date: 2025-12-01

Overview

Implemented a comprehensive SwarmOptimizer that provides topology recommendation, agent allocation, bottleneck detection, and performance optimization for agent swarms in the Agentic QE Fleet v2.0.

Files Created

1. SwarmOptimizer.ts (928 lines)

Full-featured optimizer with:

  • Topology recommendation engine
  • Agent allocation optimizer
  • Bottleneck detection system
  • Performance optimization orchestrator

2. index.ts

Export module for all optimization components.

Core Features

1. Topology Recommendation ✅

Method: recommendTopology(workload: WorkloadProfile): TopologyRecommendation

Capabilities:

  • Analyzes workload characteristics (task count, types, complexity, parallelizability, dependencies)
  • Scores all topologies (hierarchical, mesh, ring, star) based on weighted factors:
    • Parallelization score (30% weight)
    • Coordination score (30% weight)
    • Scalability score (20% weight)
    • Complexity score (10% weight)
    • Resource efficiency score (10% weight)
  • Recommends optimal topology with confidence rating
  • Calculates expected speedup (up to 3.5x)
  • Generates detailed reasoning explanation

Algorithm:

// Topology scoring formula
totalScore =
  parallelScore * 0.3 +
  coordScore * 0.3 +
  scaleScore * 0.2 +
  complexityScore * 0.1 +
  resourceScore * 0.1

// Expected speedup calculation
expectedSpeedup = 1.0 + (parallelizability * topologyMultiplier * 3)

Example:

const workload: WorkloadProfile = {
  taskCount: 50,
  taskTypes: new Map([
    ['test-generation', 20],
    ['coverage-analysis', 15],
    ['performance-test', 10],
    ['code-review', 5]
  ]),
  averageComplexity: 0.6,
  parallelizability: 0.8,
  resourceIntensity: 0.5,
  interdependencies: 0.3
};

const recommendation = await optimizer.recommendTopology(workload);
// Returns: {
//   topology: 'mesh',
//   expectedSpeedup: 3.2,
//   confidence: 0.87,
//   reasoning: '...'
// }

2. Agent Allocation ✅

Method: allocateAgents(tasks: Task[], agents: Agent[]): AgentAllocation

Capabilities:

  • Matches tasks to agents based on:
    • Capability compatibility
    • Performance history (performanceScore)
    • Current load balancing
    • Task priority and complexity
  • Implements sophisticated scoring algorithm
  • Calculates load balance metric (0-1, where 1 = perfect balance)
  • Estimates expected duration (critical path analysis)
  • Generates detailed allocation reasoning

Algorithm:

// Agent selection score
agentScore = performanceScore * (1 - currentLoad)

// Load balance calculation
variance = Σ(load - avgLoad)² / agentCount
stdDev = √variance
loadBalance = max(0, 1 - (stdDev / avgLoad))

// Critical path duration
expectedDuration = max(agentDuration for all agents)

Task Priority Ordering:

  1. Critical + High Complexity
  2. Critical + Medium Complexity
  3. High + High Complexity
  4. (continues descending...)

Example:

const tasks: Task[] = [
  {
    id: 'task-1',
    type: 'test-generation',
    complexity: 0.7,
    estimatedDuration: 120000, // 2 minutes
    dependencies: [],
    priority: 'critical',
    requiredCapabilities: ['jest', 'typescript']
  },
  // ... more tasks
];

const agents: Agent[] = [
  {
    id: 'agent-1',
    type: 'qe-test-generator',
    capabilities: ['jest', 'typescript', 'tdd'],
    currentLoad: 0.2,
    performanceScore: 0.85,
    isAvailable: true
  },
  // ... more agents
];

const allocation = await optimizer.allocateAgents(tasks, agents);
// Returns: {
//   allocations: Map { 'agent-1' => ['task-1', 'task-3'], ... },
//   loadBalance: 0.92,
//   expectedDuration: 240000,
//   reasoning: 'Task task-1 (test-generation, critical) → Agent agent-1 (score: 0.85)\n...'
// }

3. Bottleneck Detection ✅

Method: detectBottlenecks(metrics: PerformanceMetrics[]): Bottleneck[]

Detects:

  1. Agent Bottlenecks

    • Trigger: Resource utilization > 85%
    • Severity: (utilization - 0.85) / 0.15
    • Recommendation: Scale up agents or optimize distribution
  2. Memory Bottlenecks

    • Trigger: Utilization > 75% AND latency > 1000ms
    • Severity: latency / 5000 (max 5s)
    • Recommendation: Enable caching, optimize queries, add capacity
  3. Coordination Bottlenecks

    • Trigger: High latency variance (> 50% of average)
    • Severity: variance / (avgLatency * 2)
    • Recommendation: Optimize event handling, reduce sync, change topology
  4. IO Bottlenecks

    • Trigger: Low throughput (< 5 tasks/s) with low utilization (< 50%)
    • Severity: (0.5 - utilization) * 2
    • Recommendation: Enable batch processing, async IO

Example:

const metrics: PerformanceMetrics[] = [
  {
    taskThroughput: 3.2,
    averageLatency: 2500,
    resourceUtilization: 0.88,
    bottlenecks: [],
    timestamp: new Date()
  },
  // ... more metrics
];

const bottlenecks = await optimizer.detectBottlenecks(metrics);
// Returns: [
//   {
//     type: 'agent',
//     location: 'swarm',
//     severity: 0.6,
// impact: 'High agent utilization (88.0%) limiting throughput',
// recommendation: 'Scale up agent count or optimize task distribution'
//   }
// ]

4. Performance Optimization ✅

Method: optimize(config: OptimizationConfig): OptimizationResult

Process:

  1. Collect current performance metrics
  2. Calculate baseline performance score
  3. Detect and fix bottlenecks (if enabled)
  4. Recommend topology optimization (if auto-tuning enabled)
  5. Optimize agent allocation (if adaptive scaling enabled)
  6. Calculate improvements vs baseline
  7. Store results and return

Metrics Tracked:

  • Throughput improvement (%)
  • Latency improvement (%)
  • Resource utilization improvement (%)
  • Overall composite improvement (%)

Composite Score Formula:

// Weights
throughput: 40%
latency: 30%
utilization: 30%

// Normalization
normalizedThroughput = min(1, throughput / 10)  // 10 tasks/s baseline
normalizedLatency = max(0, 1 - (latency / 5000))  // 5s baseline
normalizedUtilization = utilization

// Final score
compositeScore =
  normalizedThroughput * 0.4 +
  normalizedLatency * 0.3 +
  normalizedUtilization * 0.3

Example:

const config: OptimizationConfig = {
  targetSpeedup: 3.0,
  maxAgents: 10,
  enableAutoTuning: true,
  enableBottleneckDetection: true,
  enableAdaptiveScaling: true
};

const result = await optimizer.optimize(config);
// Returns: {
//   success: true,
//   improvements: Map {
//     'throughput' => 45.2,
//     'latency' => -32.1,  // negative = improvement
//     'utilization' => 18.5,
//     'overall' => 28.7
//   },
//   topology: { ... },
//   allocation: { ... },
//   timestamp: Date
// }

Integration Points

1. PerformanceTracker Integration ✅

// Register performance tracker for an agent
optimizer.registerPerformanceTracker('agent-1', performanceTracker);

// Optimizer uses tracker to collect metrics
const metrics = await tracker.calculateImprovement();

2. LearningEngine Integration ✅

// Register learning engine for an agent
optimizer.registerLearningEngine('agent-1', learningEngine);

// Future: Use learning patterns to improve recommendations

3. EventBus Integration ✅

// Subscribe to real-time events
eventBus.subscribe('agent:completed', optimizer.handleAgentCompleted);
eventBus.subscribe('test:completed', optimizer.handleTestCompleted);

// Emit optimization events
await eventBus.emitAsync('optimization:complete', result);

4. SwarmMemoryManager Integration ✅

All optimization data persists to memory:

  • optimization/allocation/latest - Latest agent allocation
  • optimization/bottlenecks/latest - Latest bottleneck analysis
  • optimization/results/{timestamp} - Optimization results (30 day TTL)
  • optimization/metrics/current - Current performance metrics
  • optimization/workload/profile - Workload analysis
  • optimization/tasks/pending - Pending tasks
  • optimization/agents/active - Active agents

Advanced Features

1. Topology Weighting System

Each topology has performance characteristics:

hierarchical: { coordination: 0.9, parallelization: 0.6, scalability: 0.7 }
mesh: { coordination: 0.7, parallelization: 0.9, scalability: 0.8 }
ring: { coordination: 0.6, parallelization: 0.7, scalability: 0.5 }
star: { coordination: 0.8, parallelization: 0.5, scalability: 0.6 }

2. Agent Type Compatibility Matrix

Maps task types to compatible agent types:

'test-generation' → ['qe-test-generator', 'qe-integration-tester', 'coder']
'coverage-analysis' → ['qe-coverage-analyzer', 'qe-test-gap-finder']
'performance-test' → ['qe-performance-tester', 'qe-load-test-specialist']
'security-test' → ['qe-security-tester', 'qe-penetration-tester']

3. Critical Path Analysis

Calculates expected duration by finding longest agent task chain:

maxDuration = max(Σ(task.estimatedDuration) for each agent)

4. Load Variance Detection

Uses statistical variance to detect imbalanced workloads:

variance = Σ(load - avgLoad)² / n
stdDev = √variance
loadBalance = max(0, 1 - (stdDev / avgLoad))

5. Optimization History Tracking

Maintains history of all optimizations with 30-day TTL for:

  • Performance trending
  • A/B testing topologies
  • Learning what works
