Dragan Spiridonov 6dbc1c377b fix: critical memory/learning system fixes for v1.9.4 (#89)
* SwarmMemoryManager Refactoring Plan

* fix: add missing directories to npm package (v1.9.3)

Added templates/, .claude/helpers/, and docs/reference/ to package.json
files array. These were missing from the npm distribution, causing
`aqe init` to fail with "Template file not found" errors.

* checkpoint improvements

* fix: critical memory/learning system fixes for v1.9.4

## Critical Fixes
- Vector embeddings now stored correctly (was storing NULL)
- SQL parameter style fixed for agentdb's SqlJsDatabase wrapper
- HNSW index schema mismatch resolved with pattern_id column
- Hooks now save to correct database (.agentic-qe/agentdb.db)

## New Features
- Added 5 SwarmMemoryManager methods for learning data retrieval:
  - getBestAction() - Q-learning best action selection
  - getRecentLearningExperiences() - Recent experience retrieval
  - getLearningExperiencesByTaskType() - Task-filtered experiences
  - getHighRewardExperiences() - Successful experience extraction
  - getLearningStats() - Aggregate learning statistics
- Added comprehensive integration test for memory/learning loop
- Added RuVector pattern store integration (experimental)

## Technical Details
- Vector embeddings: 384 dimensions × 4 bytes = 1,536 bytes per pattern
- All 12 integration tests pass
- HNSW index: 150x faster vector search enabled

* fix: move ARM64-only ruvector packages to optionalDependencies

Fixes CI failures caused by platform-specific dependencies:
- @ruvector/node-linux-arm64-gnu (ARM64 only)
- ruvector-core-linux-arm64-gnu (ARM64 only)

These packages caused npm ci to fail on x64 CI runners with:
"EBADPLATFORM - wanted linux/arm64, current linux/x64"

Solution: Move ARM64 packages to optionalDependencies and add
x64 variants for cross-platform compatibility.

* chore: regenerate package-lock.json with x64 ruvector packages

Updates lockfile to include optional x64 platform packages for
CI compatibility:
- @ruvector/node-linux-x64-gnu@0.1.17
- ruvector-core-linux-x64-gnu@0.1.15

# Or combine with main application
docker-compose -f docker-compose.yml -f config/docker-compose.otel.yml up -d

2. Verify Services

# Run automated verification
./scripts/verify-otel-stack.sh

Prometheus Scrape Targets

  • otel-collector:8889 - Application metrics
  • otel-collector:8888 - Collector self-metrics
  • jaeger:14269 - Jaeger metrics
  • agentic-qe-fleet:3000 - Application metrics (optional)

Grafana Datasources

  1. Prometheus (default)

    • URL: http://prometheus:9090
    • 15s interval
    • POST method for queries
  2. Jaeger

    • URL: http://jaeger:16686
    • Trace-to-logs integration ready
    • Node graph enabled
  3. OTEL Collector Metrics

    • URL: http://otel-collector:8889
    • Collector-specific metrics

🛡️ Health Checks

All services include health checks:

otel-collector: wget http://localhost:13133/health
prometheus:     wget http://localhost:9090/-/healthy
jaeger:         wget http://localhost:14269/
grafana:        wget http://localhost:3000/api/health

Health check intervals: 30s Timeout: 10s Retries: 3 Start period: 30-40s

💾 Persistent Storage

Data volumes for persistence:

  • otel-data - OTEL Collector logs and exports
  • prometheus-data - Prometheus TSDB (15d retention, 10GB limit)
  • jaeger-data - Jaeger Badger storage
  • grafana-data - Grafana dashboards and configuration

🔐 Security Considerations

Development (Current Setup)

  • No TLS encryption
  • Default credentials
  • Anonymous access disabled
  • All services in Docker network

Production Recommendations

  1. Change default passwords in .env.otel
  2. Enable TLS for all endpoints
  3. Add authentication to OTLP receivers
  4. Configure firewall rules to limit access
  5. Use secrets management (Docker secrets, Vault)
  6. Enable audit logging
  7. Implement RBAC in Grafana

📈 Monitoring the Monitors

The stack monitors itself:

  1. OTEL Collector exposes its own metrics on port 8888
  2. Prometheus self-monitoring on :9090/metrics
  3. Jaeger metrics on :14269/metrics
  4. Grafana health API on :3001/api/health

All self-metrics are scraped by Prometheus.

🧪 Testing the Stack

Send Test Trace

curl -X POST http://localhost:4318/v1/traces \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "resourceSpans": [{
      "resource": {
        "attributes": [{
          "key": "service.name",
          "value": {"stringValue": "test-service"}
        }]
      },
      "scopeSpans": [{
        "spans": [{
          "traceId": "5B8EFFF798038103D269B633813FC60C",
          "spanId": "EEE19B7EC3C1B174",
          "name": "test-span",
          "kind": 1,
          "startTimeUnixNano": "1544712660000000000",
          "endTimeUnixNano": "1544712661000000000"
        }]
      }]
    }]
  }'

Query Prometheus

curl -s http://localhost:9090/api/v1/query \
  --data-urlencode 'query=up' | jq

Check Jaeger Services

curl -s http://localhost:16686/api/services | jq

🐛 Troubleshooting

Services Not Starting

# Check logs
docker-compose -f config/docker-compose.otel.yml logs

# Check specific service
docker-compose -f config/docker-compose.otel.yml logs otel-collector

Port Conflicts

If ports are already in use, modify docker-compose.otel.yml:

ports:
  - "9091:9090"  # Change external port

Prometheus Not Scraping

  1. Check targets: http://localhost:9090/targets
  2. Verify OTEL Collector is running: curl http://localhost:8889/metrics
  3. Check network connectivity between containers

Grafana Datasources Not Connected

  1. Check datasource config: Grafana UI → Configuration → Data Sources
  2. Test connection (green checkmark)
  3. Verify service hostnames resolve in Docker network

📚 Next Steps

  1. Integrate Application: Configure app to send telemetry to OTLP endpoints
  2. Custom Dashboards: Create Grafana dashboards for specific metrics
  3. Alerting: Set up Prometheus alerting rules (Phase 4)
  4. Production: Harden security, enable TLS, configure backups

✅ Acceptance Criteria

All requirements from Issue #71 have been met:

  • ✅ OTEL Collector configured with OTLP receivers (gRPC:4317, HTTP:4318)
