Inference Cost Tracking (Phase 4)
Overview
The Inference Cost Tracker provides visibility into local vs cloud inference costs, helping teams understand their cost savings from using local models (ruvllm, ONNX) compared to cloud providers (Claude, OpenRouter, OpenAI).
Implementation
Core Components
-
InferenceCostTracker (
src/core/metrics/InferenceCostTracker.ts)- Tracks inference requests by provider
- Calculates costs using current pricing tables
- Computes cost savings from local inference
- Provides comprehensive reporting
- 679 lines of production code
- 30 unit tests in
tests/unit/core/metrics/InferenceCostTracker.test.ts
-
Slash Command (
.claude/commands/aqe-costs.md)- CLI interface for cost reporting
- Multiple output formats (text, JSON)
- Filtering by provider and time period
- Reset capability
Key Features
Request Tracking
- Track requests by provider (ruvllm, anthropic, openrouter, openai, onnx)
- Classify as local ($0) or cloud (token-based pricing)
- Record token usage (input, output, cache tokens)
- Store agent and task context
- Support metadata for additional context
Cost Calculation
- Real-time cost calculation using January 2025 pricing
- Support for cache tokens (write premium, read discount)
- Automatic pricing lookup from centralized table
- Fallback to $0 for unknown models
Savings Analysis
- Calculate savings from local inference usage
- Compare against cloud baseline (Claude Sonnet 4.5)
- Show percentage of local vs cloud requests
- Estimate daily, monthly, and annual savings
Reporting
- Text format for CLI display
- JSON format for programmatic access
- Per-provider metrics breakdown
- Request and cost rate calculations
Data Management
- In-memory storage with configurable TTL (default: 24 hours)
- Automatic pruning of old requests
- Export/import for persistence
- Reset capability for testing
Usage
Programmatic API
import { getInferenceCostTracker } from 'agentic-qe/core/metrics';
const tracker = getInferenceCostTracker();
// Track local inference (free)
tracker.trackRequest({
provider: 'ruvllm',
model: 'meta-llama/llama-3.1-8b-instruct',
tokens: { inputTokens: 1000, outputTokens: 500, totalTokens: 1500 },
agentId: 'qe-test-generator',
});
// Track cloud inference
tracker.trackRequest({
provider: 'anthropic',
model: 'claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929',
tokens: { inputTokens: 2000, outputTokens: 1000, totalTokens: 3000 },
agentId: 'qe-quality-gate',
});
// Get cost report
const report = tracker.getCostReport();
console.log(`Total cost: $${report.totalCost.toFixed(4)}`);
console.log(`Savings: $${report.savings.totalSavings.toFixed(4)}`);
console.log(`Savings rate: ${report.savings.savingsPercentage.toFixed(1)}%`);
CLI Command
# Basic cost report (last 24 hours)
aqe costs
# Weekly report
aqe costs --period 7d
# Filter by provider
aqe costs --provider ruvllm
# JSON output
aqe costs --format json
# Detailed breakdown
aqe costs --detailed
# Reset data
aqe costs --reset
Pricing Tables
The system uses centralized pricing tables (src/telemetry/metrics/collectors/pricing-config.ts):
Local Providers (Free)
- ruvllm: $0.00 per token
- onnx: $0.00 per token
Cloud Providers (January 2025)
Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4.5:
- Input: $3.00 per 1M tokens
- Output: $15.00 per 1M tokens
- Cache write: $3.75 per 1M tokens (25% premium)
- Cache read: $0.30 per 1M tokens (90% discount)
OpenRouter Llama 3.1:
- 8B model: $0.03 input / $0.15 output per 1M tokens (99% cheaper than Claude)
- 70B model: $0.18 input / $0.90 output per 1M tokens
OpenAI GPT-4 Turbo:
- Input: $10.00 per 1M tokens
- Output: $30.00 per 1M tokens

Testing
Comprehensive test suite with 30 tests covering:
- Request tracking (local and cloud)
- Cost calculation (including cache tokens)
- Cost reporting and aggregation
- Provider metrics
- Request filtering
- Data management (export/import)
- Report formatting (text and JSON)
- Singleton pattern
- Edge cases
Test Results: ✅ All 30 tests passing
Run tests:
npm test -- tests/unit/core/metrics/InferenceCostTracker.test.ts
Performance
- Time Complexity: O(1) for request tracking, O(n) for reporting
- Memory Usage: ~1KB per request with TTL pruning
- Report Generation: <100ms for typical workloads
- Storage: In-memory with 24-hour default TTL
Integration Points
Memory Store
Cost data can be persisted to memory for long-term analysis:
const data = tracker.exportData();
// Store in memory: aqe/costs/tracker-data
// Later, restore:
tracker.importData(data);
Agent Integration
Agents can automatically track their inference costs:
// In agent code
const tracker = getInferenceCostTracker();
tracker.trackRequest({
provider: agentConfig.inferenceProvider,
model: agentConfig.model,
tokens: response.usage,
agentId: this.agentId,
taskId: currentTask.id,
});
Dashboard Integration
JSON output can be consumed by monitoring dashboards:
aqe costs --format json | curl -X POST https://dashboard/api/costs
Future Enhancements
- Real-time Streaming: WebSocket-based live cost updates
- Budget Alerts: Notify when costs exceed thresholds
- Cost Forecasting: Predict future costs based on trends
- Per-Agent Budgets: Track and enforce per-agent cost limits
- Cost Optimization Recommendations: AI-powered cost reduction suggestions
