Phase 3 D1: Memory Pooling Benchmark Results
Date: 2024-12-22 Target: Reduce agent spawn time from ~50-100ms to ~3-6ms (16x speedup)
Executive Summary
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Problem Verified | ✅ 35ms spawn time (25-56ms range) |
| Pooled Acquisition | 0.02ms |
| Speedup Factor | ~1750x |
| Warmup Overhead | 51ms (for 2 agents) |
| Break-even Point | 2 spawns |
| Target Met | ✅ YES |
Benchmark Methodology
What We Measure
-
Direct Spawn (Correct Baseline):
createAgent()+initialize()- Includes all expensive operations: LLM provider, federated learning, pattern store, code intelligence
-
Pooled Spawn:
pool.acquire()from pre-warmed pool- Returns reference to already-initialized agent
-
Warmup Overhead: Time to pre-create and pre-initialize pool agents
- This cost is paid upfront during fleet initialization
Previous Incorrect Benchmark
The original benchmark measured only createAgent() without initialize():
- Wrong baseline: 2.09ms
- Wrong speedup claim: 106x
This was invalid because it didn't measure the actual expensive initialization.

Conclusion
The memory pooling implementation provides genuine performance benefits:
- Problem was real: 35ms spawn time verified (claimed 50-100ms)
- Solution works: 0.02ms pooled acquisition after warmup
- Overhead acceptable: 51ms warmup amortized after 2 spawns
- Target exceeded: ~1750x speedup vs 16x target
The pool is worthwhile for any workload spawning more than 2 agents.
