GraphAdapter Implementation Summary

Overview

GraphAdapter converts CodeGraph format to MinCut input format, enabling minimum cut analysis on code dependency graphs for identifying optimal module boundaries and coupling reduction points.

Files Created

Implementation

  • /workspaces/agentic-qe-cf/src/code-intelligence/analysis/mincut/types.ts - Type definitions for MinCut analysis
  • /workspaces/agentic-qe-cf/src/code-intelligence/analysis/mincut/GraphAdapter.ts - Main adapter implementation
  • /workspaces/agentic-qe-cf/src/code-intelligence/analysis/mincut/index.ts - Module exports

Tests

  • /workspaces/agentic-qe-cf/tests/unit/code-intelligence/analysis/mincut/GraphAdapter.test.ts - Comprehensive unit tests (33 tests, all passing)

Features Implemented

1. Graph Conversion (toMinCutFormat)

  • Converts CodeGraph to MinCut-compatible format
  • Handles empty graphs and graphs with no edges
  • Filters nodes and edges based on predicates
  • Removes self-loops automatically
  • Handles missing node references gracefully
  • Deduplicates edges (keeps highest weight)
  • Supports directed/undirected graphs
  • Preserves metadata for traceability

2. Weight Normalization

Edge types mapped to coupling weights (0.0-1.0):

  • extends: 1.0 (strongest - inheritance)
  • implements: 0.9 (interface implementation)
  • imports: 0.8 (direct dependency)
  • overrides: 0.8 (method override)
  • calls: 0.6 (function calls)
  • exports: 0.5 (export relationship)
  • uses: 0.5 (type usage)
  • returns: 0.4 (return type)
  • parameter: 0.4 (parameter type)
  • contains: 0.3 (containment)
  • defines: 0.3 (definition)
  • tests: 0.2 (test relationship)

Weight calculation: baseWeight * min(edgeWeight, 2.0)

3. Subgraph Extraction (extractFileSubgraph)

  • Extracts nodes from specified file paths
  • Only includes edges connecting nodes within the subgraph
  • Useful for module-level analysis

4. File-Level Aggregation (aggregateByFile)

  • Creates one node per file
  • Aggregates all cross-file edges
  • Sums weights for multiple edges between files
  • Skips same-file edges
  • Useful for high-level module analysis

5. Graph Validation (validateGraph)

  • Checks for empty graphs
  • Ensures minimum 2 nodes for MinCut
  • Warns about disconnected graphs
  • Validates edge node references

Usage Examples

Basic Conversion

import { GraphBuilder } from '../../graph/GraphBuilder.js';
import { GraphAdapter } from './GraphAdapter.js';

const graphBuilder = new GraphBuilder();
// ... build graph ...

const minCutInput = GraphAdapter.toMinCutFormat(
  graphBuilder.exportGraph(),
  {
    nodeFilter: (node) => node.type === 'file',
    normalizeWeights: true,
    directed: false
  }
);

File-Level Analysis

// Aggregate to file level
const fileGraph = GraphAdapter.aggregateByFile(detailedGraph);

// Extract specific modules
const authModule = GraphAdapter.extractFileSubgraph(fileGraph, [
  '/src/auth/login.ts',
  '/src/auth/register.ts',
  '/src/auth/middleware.ts'
]);

// Convert for MinCut analysis
const minCutInput = GraphAdapter.toMinCutFormat(authModule, {
  normalizeWeights: true
});

Validation

const validation = GraphAdapter.validateGraph(graph);
if (!validation.valid) {
  console.error('Graph validation errors:', validation.errors);
} else {
  const minCutInput = GraphAdapter.toMinCutFormat(graph);
  // Proceed with MinCut analysis
}

Test Coverage

✅ 33 tests, all passing

  • Edge detection: O(|E|) linear scan
  • Node filtering: O(|V|) with Set lookups
  • Memory efficient: No graph copying, streaming conversion

Edge Cases Handled

  1. ✅ Empty graph → returns empty MinCutGraphInput
  2. ✅ Graph with no edges → returns nodes only
  3. ✅ Self-loops → filtered out
  4. ✅ Duplicate edges → keeps highest weight
  5. ✅ Missing nodes → edges skipped gracefully
  6. ✅ Unknown edge types → default weight 0.5
  7. ✅ Large graphs (1000+ nodes) → efficient processing

Type Safety

  • Full TypeScript type coverage
  • No type errors in compilation
  • All imports use .js extension (ES modules)
  • Compatible with existing CodeGraph types

Integration Points

Input: CodeGraph

From GraphBuilder.exportGraph():

{
  nodes: GraphNode[],
  edges: GraphEdge[]
}

Output: MinCutGraphInput

For MinCutAnalyzer:

{
  nodes: Array<{ id, label, properties }>,
  edges: Array<{ source, target, weight, edgeType }>,
  directed: boolean
}

Next Steps

The GraphAdapter is ready for integration with:

  1. MinCutAnalyzer - Computes minimum cuts using Stoer-Wagner algorithm
  2. Code Intelligence CLI - aqe kg mincut command
  3. Coupling Analysis - Identifies module boundaries
