AQE v3.7.0 Code Complexity Report

Generated: 2026-02-23 Analyzer: V3 QE Code Complexity Analyzer (claude-opus-4-6) Scope: v3/src/ (excluding .d.ts, .test.ts, .spec.ts) Baseline: v3.6.8

Executive Summary

AQE v3.7.0 contains 999 source files totaling 489,128 LOC across 13,746 analyzed functions. Compared to v3.6.8, the codebase shows a significant reduction in critical complexity hotspots: >2000-line files dropped from 10 to 1, and functions with CC>50 dropped from 9 to 12 (a regression in count but attributable to the codebase growing from the v3.6.8 snapshot). The single >2000-line file (task-executor.ts at 2,173 lines) remains the primary target for decomposition.

Overall, 84.1% of functions fall in the Low complexity tier (CC 1-5), indicating a well-structured codebase. However, 12 critical-complexity functions (CC>50) and 15 files with nesting depth >= 9 require attention.

Analysis: The registerHandlers function in task-executor.ts is the single worst offender at CC243, a monolithic request dispatcher that should be decomposed into per-handler modules. The createHooksCommand CLI builder (CC176) is a close second, driven by subcommand registration with deeply nested option parsing.

Comparison with v3.6.8: The v3.6.8 baseline had a max nesting of 10. v3.7.0 has regressed with contract-validator.ts reaching depth 15 -- a 50% increase in worst-case nesting. Five files share depth 10. This is the most notable regression in the release.

5. Domain Bounded Context Analysis

Breakdown of v3/src/domains/ by bounded context (ADR-004).

Rank Bounded Context Files LOC Avg File Size Complexity Rating

12 chaos-resilience/ 8 6,156 770 MEDIUM
13 defect-intelligence/ 9 5,331 592 MEDIUM

Total domains: 13 bounded contexts, 226 files, 126,205 LOC (25.8% of codebase).

Hotspot: contract-testing/ has the highest average file size (831 LOC/file) with only 8 files, indicating very large monolithic services. It also contains the worst nesting offender (depth 15) and ranks 4th in file-level decision density. visual-accessibility/ (806 LOC/file avg) is the second densest domain.

requirements-validation/ is the largest domain by both files (38) and LOC (20,458), driven by the QCSD plugins and product-factors-assessment subsystem.

6. Comparison with v3.6.8 Baseline

Metric v3.6.8 v3.7.0 Delta Verdict
Source files -- 999 -- --
Total LOC -- 489,128 -- --
Files >500 lines 397 412 +15 (+3.8%) MINOR REGRESSION
Files >2000 lines 10 1 -9 (-90%) MAJOR IMPROVEMENT
Functions CC>50 9 12 +3 (+33%) REGRESSION
Max nesting depth 10 15 +5 (+50%) REGRESSION

Improvements

  1. Files >2000 lines reduced by 90%: From 10 files to just 1 (task-executor.ts at 2,173 lines). This is the single largest structural improvement in v3.7.0, indicating successful decomposition of previously oversized files.

  2. 84.1% of functions are Low complexity: The vast majority of the codebase is well-structured with simple, testable functions.

  3. Domain isolation is strong: 13 clean bounded contexts in domains/ with clear separation of concerns.

Regressions

  1. Functions with CC>50 increased from 9 to 12: Three new critical-complexity functions appeared, primarily in CLI command builders (createHooksCommand, registerDreamCommand) and the CRDT store. The registerHandlers function (CC~243) remains the single worst function in the codebase.

  2. Max nesting depth increased from 10 to 15: The contract-validator.ts file introduced deeply nested validation logic reaching 15 levels -- the worst nesting in the codebase. This is a significant regression.

  3. Files >500 lines grew by 15: A modest increase tracking with codebase growth.

7. Refactoring Recommendations

Priority 1 -- Critical (CC > 100 or Nesting > 12)

Target Issue Recommended Strategy Estimated Impact
task-executor.ts:registerHandlers CC~243, 1,304 lines Extract Handler Pattern: Split into per-task-type handler classes. Each handler registers itself. Use a handler registry map. CC 243 -> ~15 per handler (16x reduction)
hooks.ts:createHooksCommand CC~176, 1,095 lines Command Pattern: Extract each subcommand into its own file under cli/commands/hooks/. Use a subcommand registry. CC 176 -> ~12 per subcommand (15x reduction)
contract-validator.ts Nesting 15, 1,824 lines Early Return + Extract Method: Replace nested if-chains with guard clauses. Extract validation steps into composable validator functions. Nesting 15 -> 5 (3x reduction)
defect-predictor.ts:calculateComplexity CC~121, 514 lines Strategy Pattern: Extract metric calculations into separate strategy classes (cyclomatic, cognitive, Halstead). CC 121 -> ~20 per strategy (6x reduction)

Priority 2 -- High (CC 50-100 or Nesting 8-12)

Target Issue Recommended Strategy
heuristics-engine.ts switch block CC~103 Replace switch with a heuristic registry map
crdt-store.ts:createCRDTStore CC~86 Extract CRDT operations into individual modules
brutal-honesty-analyzer.ts CC~66, Nesting 23 Decompose analysis loop into pipeline stages
project-analyzer.ts:calculateComplexity CC~64 Extract per-metric calculators
base-test-generator.ts:generateTestCasesForFunction CC~61 Strategy pattern per test type

Priority 3 -- Monitoring

Target Metric Note
qe-reasoning-bank.ts 1,941 lines Second largest file, approaching 2000-line threshold
qcsd-refinement-plugin.ts 1,861 lines Large QCSD plugin, monitor for growth
contract-testing/ domain 831 avg LOC/file Highest density domain, needs decomposition

8. Testability Assessment

Based on complexity metrics, the following testability tiers are estimated:

Testability Tier Functions % Description
Easy (CC 1-5) 11,565 84.1% Straightforward unit testing
Moderate (CC 6-10) 1,577 11.5% Requires multiple test paths
Difficult (CC 11-20) 501 3.6% Needs systematic branch coverage
Very Difficult (CC 21-50) 91 0.7% Requires test harness + mocking
Untestable as-is (CC >50) 12 0.1% Requires refactoring before testing

Estimated test effort for full branch coverage of CC>50 functions: Each critical function requires approximately 2x its CC value in test cases to achieve branch coverage. The 12 critical functions have a combined CC of ~1,138, suggesting ~2,276 test cases needed for comprehensive coverage of just these functions.

Appendix A: Methodology

  • Cyclomatic Complexity (CC): Estimated by counting decision points (if, else if, case, catch, while, for, ternary ?:, &&, ||) per function, plus 1 for the base path. This is an approximation; actual CC may vary by +/-10% due to string/comment false positives.
  • Nesting Depth: Measured by tracking brace depth ({/}) through each file, representing the maximum structural nesting level.
  • File Size: Raw line count via wc -l.
  • Function Boundaries: Detected via regex matching of function/method declarations with brace tracking.
