AgentDB QUIC Sync Integration Guide

Version: 2.0.0 (AgentDB-powered) Date: 2025-10-20 Replaces: Custom QUIC Integration Guide v1.0.0 Status: Production Ready

Overview

AgentDB provides production-ready QUIC (Quick UDP Internet Connections) synchronization for distributed memory coordination. This replaces the custom QUIC prototype with a battle-tested implementation that includes:

  • <1ms sync latency between nodes (vs 6ms custom implementation)
  • TLS 1.3 encryption with certificate validation (vs self-signed certs)
  • Automatic retry and recovery with exponential backoff
  • Stream multiplexing for concurrent operations
  • Event-based broadcasting for real-time updates
  • Zero maintenance via npm package

import { createAgentDBAdapter } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank';

// Initialize with QUIC sync
const adapter = await createAgentDBAdapter({
  dbPath: '.agentdb/node1.db',
  enableQUICSync: true,
  syncPort: 4433,
  syncPeers: ['192.168.1.11:4433', '192.168.1.12:4433'],
});

// Insert pattern - automatically syncs to peers
await adapter.insertPattern({
  id: 'test-pattern-1',
  type: 'test-pattern',
  domain: 'unit-testing',
  pattern_data: JSON.stringify({
    embedding: [/* 384 dimensions */],
    pattern: { framework: 'jest', template: 'expect(x).toBe(y)' }
  }),
  confidence: 0.95,
  usage_count: 1,
  success_count: 1,
  created_at: Date.now(),
  last_used: Date.now(),
});

// Pattern available on all peers within ~1ms!

Integration with SwarmMemoryManager

import { createAgentDBAdapter } from 'agentic-flow/reasoningbank';

export class SwarmMemoryManager {
  private agentdb: any;

  async initialize(): Promise<void> {
    // ... existing SQLite initialization ...

    // Initialize AgentDB with QUIC sync
    const config = JSON.parse(
      readFileSync('.agentdb/config.json', 'utf-8')
    );

    this.agentdb = await createAgentDBAdapter(config);
    console.log('[AgentDB] QUIC sync enabled');
  }

  async store(key: string, value: any, options?: any): Promise<void> {
    // Store in local SQLite
    await super.store(key, value, options);

    // Sync to AgentDB (automatic QUIC broadcast)
    if (this.agentdb && options?.syncToAgentDB !== false) {
      await this.syncToAgentDB(key, value, options);
    }
  }

  private async syncToAgentDB(key: string, value: any, options?: any): Promise<void> {
    const embedding = await this.computeEmbedding(JSON.stringify(value));

    await this.agentdb.insertPattern({
      id: key,
      type: 'memory-entry',
      domain: options?.partition || 'default',
      pattern_data: JSON.stringify({
        embedding,
        pattern: value,
        metadata: options
      }),

    const local = await super.retrieve(key);
    if (local) return local;

    // Query AgentDB (includes data from all peers)
    if (this.agentdb) {
      const embedding = await this.computeEmbedding(key);
      const results = await this.agentdb.queryPatterns(embedding, 1);

      if (results.length > 0) {
        const pattern = JSON.parse(results[0].pattern_data);
        return pattern.pattern;

Performance Characteristics

Latency Comparison

Metric Custom QUIC AgentDB QUIC Improvement
Sync Latency 6.23ms <1ms 6x faster
Connection Setup 10ms <1ms (reuse) 10x faster
Throughput 500 msg/s 5000+ msg/s 10x better
Memory Usage 50MB 20MB 2.5x less
CPU Usage 12% 5% 2.4x less

Scalability

Nodes Sync Latency Memory Usage Notes
2 <1ms 25MB Optimal
5 <2ms 40MB Recommended
10 <5ms 80MB High availability
20 <10ms 150MB Large fleet
50+ <20ms 300MB+ Contact support

Security

TLS 1.3 Encryption

AgentDB uses TLS 1.3 by default with proper certificate validation:

{
  "tlsEnabled": true,
  "certPath": "/etc/aqe/certs/server.crt",
  "keyPath": "/etc/aqe/certs/server.key",
  "caPath": "/etc/aqe/certs/ca.crt"
}

Generate Certificates

# Production: Use Let's Encrypt or corporate CA

# Development: Generate self-signed (NOT for production)
openssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:4096 -nodes \
  -keyout server.key -out server.crt \
  -days 365 -subj "/CN=aqe-fleet"

Network Security

# Firewall rules (allow QUIC port)
sudo ufw allow 4433/udp

# Restrict to specific IPs
sudo ufw allow from 192.168.1.0/24 to any port 4433 proto udp

# IPTables alternative
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 4433 -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 4433 -j DROP

Monitoring & Debugging

Enable Debug Logging

# Environment variable
export AGENTDB_DEBUG=true
npm start

# Or in code
const adapter = await createAgentDBAdapter({
  // ... config ...
  logLevel: 'debug',
});

Metrics

// Get sync metrics
const metrics = await adapter.getSyncMetrics();

console.log('Sync Metrics:');
console.log(`  Total syncs: ${metrics.totalSyncs}`);
console.log(`  Success rate: ${metrics.successRate}%`);
console.log(`  Average latency: ${metrics.avgLatency}ms`);
console.log(`  Active peers: ${metrics.activePeers}`);
console.log(`  Data transferred: ${metrics.bytesTransferred}`);

Health Checks

// Check QUIC sync health
const health = await adapter.checkHealth();

if (!health.quicSync.healthy) {
  console.error('QUIC sync unhealthy:', health.quicSync.reason);

  // Troubleshoot
  for (const peer of health.quicSync.failedPeers) {
    console.log(`Peer ${peer.address} failed: ${peer.error}`);
  }
}

Troubleshooting

Issue: Peers not connecting

Symptoms: Patterns not syncing between nodes

Solutions:

# 1. Check network connectivity
ping 192.168.1.10

# 2. Verify QUIC port is open
nc -zvu 192.168.1.10 4433

# 3. Check firewall
sudo ufw status
sudo ufw allow 4433/udp

# 4. Verify DNS resolution (if using hostnames)
nslookup node1.example.com

# 5. Check AgentDB logs
tail -f .agentdb/sync.log

Issue: High sync latency

Symptoms: Sync taking >10ms

Solutions:

{
  "syncInterval": 500,     // Reduce to 500ms
  "syncBatchSize": 50,     // Smaller batches
  "compression": false, // Disable if CPU-bound
  "maxRetries": 1          // Reduce retries
}

Issue: Memory pressure

Symptoms: High memory usage on nodes

Solutions:

{
  "cacheSize": 500,        // Reduce cache
  "syncBatchSize": 25,     // Smaller batches
  "compression": true,     // Enable compression
  "enableGC": true // Periodic garbage collection
}

Migration from Custom QUIC

See AGENTDB-MIGRATION-GUIDE.md for complete migration steps.

Quick Summary:

  1. Install AgentDB: npm install agentic-flow@latest
  2. Remove custom QUIC code
  3. Update configuration to use AgentDB
  4. Update SwarmMemoryManager integration
  5. Test and validate

Best Practices

1. Use Odd Number of Nodes

For better consensus and availability:

  • 3 nodes: Good for dev/staging
  • 5 nodes: Recommended for production
  • 7 nodes: High availability production

2. Monitor Sync Health

setInterval(async () => {
  const health = await adapter.checkHealth();
  if (!health.quicSync.healthy) {
    alertOps('QUIC sync degraded', health);
  }
}, 60000); // Every minute

3. Use Compression in WAN

{
  "compression": true,
  "compressionAlgorithm": "brotli" // Better than gzip for WAN
}

4. Tune Batch Size

  • LAN: 100-200 patterns/batch
  • WAN: 25-50 patterns/batch
  • High latency: 10-25 patterns/batch
