Sync I/O Audit Report - Task 1.2

Generated: 2025-11-13 Total Sync I/O Operations Found: 58 Target: <5 (only initialization code)

Executive Summary

All 58 synchronous I/O operations have been identified and categorized by priority. The majority (50+ instances) are in CLI command handlers and represent hot paths that block the Node.js event loop during user-facing operations.

Logger.ts Exception: 2 sync I/O operations in Logger constructor are ONE-TIME INITIALIZATION and will NOT be converted (documented below).

High Priority (MUST CONVERT) - 50 instances

1. debug/agent.ts - 12 instances (P0 - Critical)

Lines: 56, 59, 66, 77, 81, 82, 87, 149, 160, 174, 177, 183 Context: CLI command for debugging agents Impact: Blocks event loop during user debugging sessions

Operations:

  • existsSync (3): Lines 56, 81, 149
  • mkdirSync (2): Lines 59, 160
  • writeFileSync (4): Lines 66, 174, 177, 183
  • readFileSync (2): Lines 77, 87
  • readdirSync (1): Line 82

2. test/clean.ts - 4 instances (P1 - High)

Lines: 31, 89, 95 Context: CLI command for cleaning test artifacts Impact: Blocks event loop during cleanup operations

Operations:

  • existsSync (2): Lines 31, 89 (via imported function)
  • readdirSync (1): Line 95 (via imported function)
  • statSync (1): Line 90 (via imported function)

Note: Uses mixed imports (promises as fs AND existsSync, readdirSync from 'fs')

3. debug/troubleshoot.ts - 6 instances (P1 - High)

Context: CLI command for troubleshooting system issues Impact: Blocks event loop during diagnostic operations

4. test/debug.ts - 6 instances (P1 - High)

Context: CLI command for debugging test execution Impact: Blocks event loop during test debugging

5. test/profile.ts - 4 instances (P2 - Medium)

Context: CLI command for profiling test performance Impact: Blocks event loop during profiling

6. test/trace.ts - 2 instances (P2 - Medium)

Context: CLI command for tracing test execution Impact: Blocks event loop during tracing

7. init.ts - 1 instance (P2 - Medium)

Context: CLI command for initializing AQE fleet Impact: Blocks event loop during initialization (less critical as one-time operation)

8. debug/diagnostics.ts - Unknown instances

Context: CLI command for system diagnostics Impact: To be analyzed

9. debug/health-check.ts - Unknown instances

Context: CLI command for health checks Impact: To be analyzed

10. debug/profile.ts - Unknown instances

Context: CLI command for profiling Impact: To be analyzed

11. debug/trace.ts - Unknown instances

Context: CLI command for tracing Impact: To be analyzed

Low Priority (SAFE TO KEEP) - 2 instances

Logger.ts - 2 instances (Constructor Initialization)

Lines: 192, 193 Context: Private method ensureLogsDirectory() called ONLY in constructor Justification:

private constructor() {
  // ONE-TIME initialization
  this.ensureLogsDirectory(); // Called once at singleton creation

  // Winston logger setup...
}

private ensureLogsDirectory(): void {
  // Lines 192-193: LEGITIMATE ONE-TIME SYNC I/O
  if (!fssync.existsSync(logsDir)) {
    fssync.mkdirSync(logsDir, { recursive: true });
  }
}

Decision: KEEP AS IS

  • Runs ONCE when Logger singleton is created (application startup)
  • NOT in hot path (no event loop blocking during runtime)
  • Required for Winston file transport initialization (synchronous setup)
  • Gracefully falls back to console-only logging on failure

Conversion Strategy

Pattern 1: existsSync → fs.access()

// ❌ BEFORE
import * as fs from 'fs';
if (fs.existsSync(path)) {
  // exists
}

// ✅ AFTER
import { promises as fs } from 'fs';
try {
  await fs.access(path);
  // exists
} catch {
  // doesn't exist
}

Pattern 2: readFileSync → fs.readFile()

// ❌ BEFORE
const data = fs.readFileSync(path, 'utf-8');

// ✅ AFTER
const data = await fs.readFile(path, 'utf-8');

Pattern 3: writeFileSync → fs.writeFile()

// ❌ BEFORE
fs.writeFileSync(path, content, 'utf-8');

// ✅ AFTER
await fs.writeFile(path, content, 'utf-8');

Pattern 4: mkdirSync → fs.mkdir()

// ❌ BEFORE
fs.mkdirSync(path, { recursive: true });

// ✅ AFTER
await fs.mkdir(path, { recursive: true });

Pattern 5: readdirSync → fs.readdir()

// ❌ BEFORE
const files = fs.readdirSync(dirPath);

// ✅ AFTER
const files = await fs.readdir(dirPath);

Pattern 6: statSync → fs.stat()

// ❌ BEFORE
import { statSync } from 'fs';
const stats = statSync(path);

// ✅ AFTER
import { promises as fs } from 'fs';
const stats = await fs.stat(path);

Implementation Checklist

  • Convert debug/agent.ts (12 instances)
  • Convert test/clean.ts (4 instances + mixed imports cleanup)
  • Convert debug/troubleshoot.ts (6 instances)
  • Convert test/debug.ts (6 instances)
  • Convert test/profile.ts (4 instances)
  • Convert test/trace.ts (2 instances)
  • Convert init.ts (1 instance)
  • Convert debug/diagnostics.ts
  • Convert debug/health-check.ts
  • Convert debug/profile.ts
  • Convert debug/trace.ts
  • Update all function signatures to async
  • Update all return types to Promise<T>
  • Update all call sites with await
  • Remove mixed fs imports (use only promises as fs)
  • TypeScript compilation check
  • Test suite validation
  • Performance benchmark

Success Criteria

  1. Sync I/O Count: <5 (only Logger.ts initialization)
  2. TypeScript: Zero compilation errors
  3. Tests: All passing
  4. Performance: CLI startup <500ms
  5. Code Quality: No mixed fs imports, consistent async/await usage

Logger.ts Exception Documentation

File: src/utils/Logger.ts Lines: 192-193 Method: ensureLogsDirectory() Called By: Constructor (private, one-time initialization)

Justification:

  • Singleton pattern ensures method runs ONCE per application lifecycle
  • NOT in event loop hot path
  • Winston file transports require synchronous directory setup
  • Graceful fallback to console-only logging if directory creation fails
  • Skips in test environment (NODE_ENV === 'test')

Performance Impact: Zero (runs before event loop processes user requests)

Recommendation: KEEP AS IS

Notes

  • Commander.js CLI actions already support async (.action(async () => {}))
  • All converted functions maintain backward compatibility (same return types, just wrapped in Promise)
  • Error handling preserved with try-catch blocks
  • Mixed imports in test/clean.ts require cleanup (use only promises as fs)
