State Management Strategy

1. Context API (Connection State)

Usage: WebSocket connection, theme, global filters

WebSocketContext:

interface WebSocketContextType {
  // Connection
  connected: boolean;
  reconnect: () => void;
  lastError: Error | null;

  // Real-time data (latest only)
  latestEvent: LifecycleEvent | null;
  latestMetrics: QualityMetrics | null;

  // Selection
  selectedNode: string | null;
  setSelectedNode: (id: string | null) => void;
}

Rationale:

  • Simple pub/sub for connection status
  • Minimal re-renders (only on connection changes)
  • Easy to use with useContext(WebSocketContext)

2. Zustand (Application State)

Usage: Graph data, metrics history, events timeline, UI state

graphStore.ts:

interface GraphStore {
  // Data
  nodes: AgentNode[];
  edges: AgentEdge[];

  // Actions
  setGraphData: (nodes: AgentNode[], edges: AgentEdge[]) => void;
  updateNode: (id: string, updates: Partial<AgentNode>) => void;

  // Filters
  filters: FilterState;
  setFilters: (filters: FilterState) => void;

  // Selections
  selectedNodeId: string | null;
  selectNode: (id: string | null) => void;
}

metricsStore.ts:

interface MetricsStore {
  // Data (ringbuffer, max 1000 entries)
  history: QualityMetrics[];

  // Actions
  addMetrics: (metrics: QualityMetrics) => void;
  clearHistory: () => void;

  // Computed
  latestMetrics: QualityMetrics | null;
  averageMetrics: QualityMetrics | null;
}

eventsStore.ts:

interface EventsStore {
  // Data (ringbuffer, max 1000 entries)
  events: LifecycleEvent[];

  // Actions
  addEvent: (event: LifecycleEvent) => void;
  clearEvents: () => void;

  // Filters
  filteredEvents: LifecycleEvent[];
  setEventFilters: (filters: EventFilters) => void;
}

uiStore.ts:

interface UIStore {
  // Panel visibility
  metricsExpanded: boolean;
  timelineExpanded: boolean;
  detailPanelOpen: boolean;

  // Theme
  theme: 'light' | 'dark';
  setTheme: (theme: 'light' | 'dark') => void;

  // Layout
  rightColumnWidth: number;
  setRightColumnWidth: (width: number) => void;
}

Rationale:

  • Zustand is lightweight (1KB) vs Redux (7KB)
  • No boilerplate (actions, reducers, dispatchers)
  • Easy to persist with middleware
  • Direct store access without Context Provider
  • Built-in devtools support

3. React Query (REST API State)

Usage: Historical data fetching, caching, background refetch

Queries:

// Fetch session graph data
useQuery({
  queryKey: ['session', sessionId, 'graph'],
  queryFn: () => api.getSessionGraph(sessionId),
  staleTime: 30000, // 30 seconds
  cacheTime: 300000, // 5 minutes
});

// Fetch reasoning chain
useQuery({
  queryKey: ['reasoning', chainId],
  queryFn: () => api.getReasoningChain(chainId),
  enabled: !!chainId, // Only fetch when chainId exists
});

// Fetch metrics history
useQuery({
  queryKey: ['metrics', timeRange],
  queryFn: () => api.getMetrics(timeRange),
  refetchInterval: 60000, // Refetch every minute
});

Rationale:

  • Automatic caching and deduplication
  • Background refetching
  • Optimistic updates
  • Request cancellation
  • Built-in loading/error states
  • Network-aware (pauses on offline)

WebSocket Integration

Connection Management

WebSocketClient.ts:

class WebSocketClient {
  private ws: WebSocket | null = null;
  private reconnectTimer: NodeJS.Timeout | null = null;

  private subscriptions: Map<string, Set<MessageHandler>> = new Map();

      }
    }
  }

  disconnect(): void {
    this.reconnectTimer && clearTimeout(this.reconnectTimer);
    this.ws?.close();
  }
}

Message Types

WebSocket Message Protocol:

// Server -> Client messages
type WebSocketMessage =
  | { type: 'event'; timestamp: string; data: LifecycleEvent }
  | { type: 'reasoning'; timestamp: string; data: ReasoningChain }
  | { type: 'metrics'; timestamp: string; data: QualityMetrics }
  | { type: 'heartbeat'; timestamp: string; data: { status: 'ok' } }
  | { type: 'graph-update'; timestamp: string; data: GraphData };

// Client -> Server messages
type ClientMessage =
  | { type: 'subscribe'; options: SubscriptionOptions }
  | { type: 'unsubscribe' }
  | { type: 'ping' };

Hook Integration

useWebSocket.ts:

export function useWebSocket() {
  const [client] = useState(() => new WebSocketClient({
    url: import.meta.env.VITE_WS_URL || 'ws://localhost:8080',
  }));

  const [connected, setConnected] = useState(false);
  const graphStore = useGraphStore();
  const metricsStore = useMetricsStore();
  const eventsStore = useEventsStore();

  useEffect(() => {
    // Subscribe to connection events
    client.on('connected', () => setConnected(true));
    client.on('disconnected', () => setConnected(false));

    // Subscribe to message types
    const unsubscribeEvent = client.subscribe('event', (data: LifecycleEvent) => {
      eventsStore.addEvent(data);
    });

    const unsubscribeMetrics = client.subscribe('metrics', (data: QualityMetrics) => {
      metricsStore.addMetrics(data);
    });

    const unsubscribeGraph = client.subscribe('graph-update', (data: GraphData) => {
      graphStore.setGraphData(data.nodes, data.edges);
    });

    // Connect
    client.connect();

    // Cleanup
    return () => {
      unsubscribeEvent();
      unsubscribeMetrics();
      unsubscribeGraph();
      client.disconnect();
    };
  }, [client]);

  return { connected, reconnect: () => client.connect() };
}

REST API Integration

API Client

RestApiClient.ts:

class RestApiClient {
  private baseURL: string;

  constructor(config: ApiConfig = {}) {
    this.baseURL = config.baseURL || 'http://localhost:3001';
  }

  // GET /api/visualization/events
  async getEvents(params: {
    since?: string;
    limit?: number;
    offset?: number;
  }): Promise<ApiResponse<LifecycleEvent[]>> {
    const query = new URLSearchParams(params as any);
    return this.fetch(`/api/visualization/events?${query}`);
  }

  // GET /api/visualization/metrics
  async getMetrics(timeRange: '1h' | '24h' | '7d' = '24h'): Promise<ApiResponse<MetricsData>> {
    return this.fetch(`/api/visualization/metrics?timeRange=${timeRange}`);
  }

  // GET /api/visualization/reasoning/:chainId
  async getReasoningChain(chainId: string): Promise<ApiResponse<ReasoningTree>> {
    return this.fetch(`/api/visualization/reasoning/${chainId}`);
  }

  // GET /api/visualization/sessions/:sessionId
  async getSession(sessionId: string): Promise<ApiResponse<SessionVisualization>> {
    return this.fetch(`/api/visualization/sessions/${sessionId}`);
  }

  // GET /api/visualization/graph/:sessionId
  async getSessionGraph(
    sessionId: string,
    options: { algorithm?: string; spacing?: number } = {}
  ): Promise<ApiResponse<VisualizationGraph>> {
    const query = new URLSearchParams(options as any);
    return this.fetch(`/api/visualization/graph/${sessionId}?${query}`);
  }

  private async fetch<T>(path: string): Promise<ApiResponse<T>> {
    const response = await fetch(`${this.baseURL}${path}`, {
      headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
    });

    if (!response.ok) {
      throw new Error(`API error: ${response.statusText}`);
    }

    return response.json();
  }
}

export const apiClient = new RestApiClient();

React Query Hooks

useRestApi.ts:

export function useEvents(params: EventQueryParams) {
  return useQuery({
    queryKey: ['events', params],
    queryFn: () => apiClient.getEvents(params),
    staleTime: 10000, // 10 seconds
  });
}

export function useMetrics(timeRange: '1h' | '24h' | '7d' = '24h') {

  });
}

export function useSessionGraph(sessionId: string, options?: GraphOptions) {
  return useQuery({
    queryKey: ['graph', sessionId, options],

Performance Optimization

1. Graph Rendering

Strategy: Progressive rendering for large graphs

// Render nodes in batches
function renderGraphBatched(nodes: AgentNode[], batchSize = 100) {
  const batches = chunk(nodes, batchSize);

  batches.forEach((batch, i) => {
    setTimeout(() => {
      cy.add(batch.map(nodeToElement));
      if (i === batches.length - 1) {
        cy.layout({ name: 'cose-bilkent' }).run();
      }
    }, i * 50); // 50ms between batches
  });
}

Level-of-Detail (LOD):

// Hide labels when zoomed out
cy.on('zoom', () => {
  const zoom = cy.zoom();
  if (zoom < 0.5) {
    cy.style().selector('node').style({ 'font-size': '0px' }).update();
  } else {
    cy.style().selector('node').style({ 'font-size': '12px' }).update();
  }
});

2. Virtual Scrolling

Timeline Component:

import { useVirtualizer } from '@tanstack/react-virtual';

function LifecycleTimeline({ events }: Props) {
  const parentRef = useRef<HTMLDivElement>(null);

  const virtualizer = useVirtualizer({
    count: events.length,
    getScrollElement: () => parentRef.current,
    estimateSize: () => 60, // Estimated row height
    overscan: 5, // Render 5 extra rows above/below
  });

  return (
    <div ref={parentRef} className="h-full overflow-auto">
      <div style={{ height: `${virtualizer.getTotalSize()}px`, position: 'relative' }}>
        {virtualizer.getVirtualItems().map((virtualRow) => (
          <TimelineEvent
            key={virtualRow.key}
            event={events[virtualRow.index]}
            style={{
              position: 'absolute',
              top: 0,
              left: 0,
              width: '100%',
              transform: `translateY(${virtualRow.start}px)`,
            }}
          />
        ))}
      </div>
    </div>
  );
}

3. Memoization

Expensive Computations:

// Memoize filtered graph data
const filteredNodes = useMemo(() => {
  return nodes.filter((node) => {
    if (filters.agentTypes.length && !filters.agentTypes.includes(node.type)) {
      return false;
    }
    if (filters.statuses.length && !filters.statuses.includes(node.status)) {
      return false;
    }
    return true;
  });
}, [nodes, filters]);

// Memoize metrics calculations
const averageMetrics = useMemo(() => {
  if (metricsHistory.length === 0) return null;

  return {
    coverage: mean(metricsHistory.map((m) => m.coverage)),
    performance: mean(metricsHistory.map((m) => m.performance)),
    // ...
  };
}, [metricsHistory]);

4. Debouncing & Throttling

Search Input:

import { useDebouncedValue } from '@/hooks/useDebouncedValue';

function GraphToolbar() {
  const [searchQuery, setSearchQuery] = useState('');
  const debouncedQuery = useDebouncedValue(searchQuery, 300); // 300ms delay

  useEffect(() => {
    // Filter graph with debounced value
    graphStore.setFilters({ searchQuery: debouncedQuery });
  }, [debouncedQuery]);

  return (
    <input
      value={searchQuery}
      onChange={(e) => setSearchQuery(e.target.value)}
    />
  );
}

Scroll Events:

import { useThrottledCallback } from '@/hooks/useThrottledCallback';

function Timeline() {
  const handleScroll = useThrottledCallback((e: Event) => {
    // Check if scrolled to bottom
    const target = e.target as HTMLDivElement;
    const bottom = target.scrollHeight - target.scrollTop === target.clientHeight;

    if (bottom) {
      // Load more events
      fetchMoreEvents();
    }
  }, 200); // 200ms throttle

  return <div onScroll={handleScroll}>...</div>;
}

Testing Strategy

Unit Tests (Vitest + React Testing Library)

Coverage Target: >80%

Example Test:

// tests/unit/components/MindMap/MindMap.test.tsx
import { render, screen, fireEvent } from '@testing-library/react';
import { MindMap } from '@/components/MindMap/MindMap';
import { WebSocketProvider } from '@/contexts/WebSocketContext';

describe('MindMap', () => {
  it('renders graph with nodes and edges', () => {
    const mockGraphData = {
      nodes: [
        { id: 'node1', label: 'Test Node', type: 'coder', status: 'running' },
      ],
      edges: [],
    };

    render(
      <WebSocketProvider>
        <MindMap />
      </WebSocketProvider>
    );

    // Wait for Cytoscape to render
    expect(screen.getByText(/nodes/i)).toBeInTheDocument();
  });

  it('filters nodes by agent type', () => {
    render(
      <WebSocketProvider>
        <MindMap />
      </WebSocketProvider>
    );

    const filterButton = screen.getByRole('button', { name: /coder/i });
    fireEvent.click(filterButton);

    // Verify filter applied
    expect(filterButton).toHaveClass('bg-primary-500');
  });
});

Integration Tests

WebSocket Integration:

// tests/integration/websocket.test.ts
import { WebSocketClient } from '@/services/WebSocketClient';

describe('WebSocketClient', () => {
  let server: MockWebSocketServer;

  beforeEach(() => {
    server = new MockWebSocketServer('ws://localhost:8080');
  });

  it('connects and receives messages', async () => {
    const client = new WebSocketClient({ url: 'ws://localhost:8080' });

    const messagePromise = new Promise((resolve) => {
      client.subscribe('event', resolve);
    });

    client.connect();

    // Wait for connection
    await waitFor(() => expect(client.isConnected()).toBe(true));

    // Send mock message from server
    server.send({ type: 'event', data: { id: '123', agentId: 'test' } });

    const message = await messagePromise;
    expect(message).toEqual({ id: '123', agentId: 'test' });
  });

  it('reconnects automatically on disconnect', async () => {
    const client = new WebSocketClient({
      url: 'ws://localhost:8080',
      reconnectInterval: 100,
    });

    client.connect();
    await waitFor(() => expect(client.isConnected()).toBe(true));

    // Simulate disconnect
    server.close();
    await waitFor(() => expect(client.isConnected()).toBe(false));

    // Should reconnect automatically
    server.open();
    await waitFor(() => expect(client.isConnected()).toBe(true), { timeout: 500 });
  });
});

Architecture Decision Records (ADRs)

ADR-001: State Management - Zustand over Redux

Status: Accepted

Context: Need global state management for graph data, metrics, events

Decision: Use Zustand instead of Redux

Rationale:

  • Zustand: 1KB, Redux: 7KB (smaller bundle)
  • No boilerplate (actions, reducers, types)
  • Built-in TypeScript support
  • Easy to persist with middleware
  • DevTools support via zustand/middleware
  • Direct store access without Provider wrappers

Consequences:

  • Simpler codebase, faster development
  • May need to learn Zustand patterns (low learning curve)

ADR-002: Data Fetching - React Query

Status: Accepted

Context: Need to fetch historical data from REST API with caching

Decision: Use React Query (@tanstack/react-query)

Rationale:

  • Automatic caching and request deduplication
  • Background refetching
  • Optimistic updates
  • Built-in loading/error states
  • Request cancellation
  • Network-aware (pauses on offline)
  • Better than SWR for complex scenarios

Consequences:

  • Additional 13KB to bundle
  • Need QueryClientProvider wrapper
  • Standard patterns for data fetching

ADR-003: WebSocket - Native over Socket.io

Status: Accepted

Context: Need real-time WebSocket connection to backend

Decision: Use native WebSocket API

Rationale:

  • Backend uses native ws library (not Socket.io)
  • No need for Socket.io features (rooms, namespaces)
  • Smaller bundle size (0KB vs 50KB)
  • Simple message protocol (JSON)
  • Easy to implement reconnection logic

Consequences:

  • Need to implement reconnection manually
  • No built-in acknowledgements (not needed)

ADR-004: Styling - Tailwind CSS

Status: Accepted

Context: Need utility-first CSS framework

Decision: Use Tailwind CSS (already configured)

Rationale:

  • Fast development with utility classes
  • No CSS file bloat (purges unused)
  • Design system via tailwind.config.js
  • Responsive design utilities
  • Dark mode support

Consequences:

  • Long className strings (but readable)
  • Need to learn Tailwind conventions

ADR-005: Graph Layout - Cytoscape.js

Status: Accepted

Context: Need interactive graph visualization

Decision: Use Cytoscape.js with cose-bilkent layout

Rationale:

  • Production-ready, battle-tested
  • Rich API for node/edge manipulation
  • Multiple layout algorithms
  • Good performance (1000+ nodes)
  • Active community

Alternatives Considered:

  • D3.js: More flexible but requires more code
  • vis.js: Less powerful layout algorithms
  • React Flow: Better for flowcharts, not agent graphs

Consequences:

  • Larger bundle (200KB)
  • Need to learn Cytoscape API

Next Steps for Implementation

Phase 1: Foundation (Week 1)

  1. Install Dependencies

    cd /workspaces/agentic-qe-cf/frontend
    npm install zustand @tanstack/react-query @tanstack/react-virtual clsx lodash-es
    npm install -D vitest @testing-library/react @playwright/test prettier

  2. Create Service Layer

    • Implement WebSocketClient.ts with reconnection
    • Implement RestApiClient.ts with fetch wrapper
    • Create API type definitions in types/api.ts
  3. Setup State Management

    • Create Zustand stores (graph, metrics, events, ui)
    • Setup React Query provider in main.tsx
    • Create custom hooks for state access

Phase 2: Core Components (Week 2)

  1. Complete MindMap Component

    • Add layout algorithm selector

Conclusion

This frontend architecture provides a complete, production-ready blueprint for implementing the Phase 3 GOAP Visualization System. Key highlights:

✅ Technology Stack Defined: React 18 + TypeScript + Vite + Tailwind ✅ State Management Strategy: Zustand + React Query + Context API ✅ WebSocket Integration: Native WebSocket with auto-reconnect ✅ REST API Integration: React Query with caching ✅ Component Specifications: 4 major components (MindMap, Metrics, Timeline, Detail) ✅ Performance Strategy: Virtual scrolling, memoization, batched rendering ✅ Testing Strategy: Unit (Vitest), Integration, E2E (Playwright) ✅ Deployment Ready: Build scripts, environment variables, Vite config

Status: ✅ Architecture Complete - Ready for Handoff to Implementation Agents

The frontend can now be built incrementally by following the 4-week implementation plan. All architectural decisions are documented, and integration points with the backend are clearly defined.
