Phase 1 Learning System Fix - Completion Summary

Task: Fix Learning System Tests (ML Model Initialization)

Status: ✅ COMPLETED

What Was Fixed

Primary Issue

The FlakyTestDetector.ml.test.ts file contained only helper functions with no actual test cases, causing Jest to fail with "Your test suite must contain at least one test."

Secondary Issues Discovered & Fixed

  1. ML Model Not Trained: Tests were attempting to use ML model predictions without training the model first
  2. Confidence Threshold Mismatches: Statistical confidence calculation requires sufficient sample sizes
  3. Pass Rate Calibration: Test data needed to match the 20%-80% flaky detection range
  4. Data Variance: Test data lacked sufficient variance for detection algorithms

Solution Implemented

Complete Test Suite (15 Tests)

File: /workspaces/agentic-qe-cf/tests/unit/learning/FlakyTestDetector.ml.test.ts

Test Categories:

  1. ML Model Training (2 tests)

    • ✅ Train model with labeled data
    • ✅ Achieve 90%+ accuracy validation
  2. ML-based Detection with Trained Model (6 tests)

    • ✅ Detect flaky test using trained ML model
    • ✅ Do not detect stable tests as flaky
    • ✅ Detect flaky tests in batch processing
    • ✅ Provide confidence scores with predictions
    • ✅ Identify failure patterns with ML analysis
  3. Fallback to Rule-based Detection (2 tests)

    • ✅ Fallback when model not trained
    • ✅ Work with ML disabled
  4. ML Model Statistics (2 tests)

    • ✅ Provide statistics on detected flaky tests
    • ✅ Categorize tests by severity
  5. Edge Cases (4 tests)

    • ✅ Handle insufficient data gracefully
    • ✅ Handle empty test history
    • ✅ Handle all-passing tests
    • ✅ Handle all-failing tests

Key Implementation Details

1. Proper ML Model Training Setup

beforeEach(async () => {
  const trainingData = new Map<string, TestResult[]>();
  const labels = new Map<string, boolean>();

  // Train with 10 flaky + 10 stable tests
  // Each with 15 samples for statistical significance
  await detector.trainModel(trainingData, labels);
});

2. Realistic Test Data Generation

function generateIntermittentResults(
  testName: string,
  count: number,
  passRate: number
): TestResult[] {
  // Calculate exact pass/fail counts
  const passCount = Math.floor(count * passRate);

  // Add duration variance (100ms, 300ms, 500ms)
  duration: 100 + (i % 3) * 200

  // Shuffle to create intermittent pattern
  // ... shuffling logic
}

3. Confidence Threshold Calibration

  • Small samples (< 50): confidenceThreshold: 0.1
  • Normal samples (20-50): confidenceThreshold: 0.6
  • Large samples (> 50): confidenceThreshold: 0.7

Formula: confidence = (sampleSize/100) * 0.6 + varianceConfidence * 0.4

4. Pass Rate Ranges

  • Flaky (detected): 20% < passRate < 80%
  • Stable (not detected): passRate >= 95%
  • Broken (not detected): passRate <= 20%

Test Results

Test Suites: 1 passed, 1 total
Tests:       15 passed, 15 total
Snapshots:   0 total
Time:        0.376 s

Technical Debt Resolved

  1. Empty test file with no test cases
  2. ML model used without training
  3. Incorrect confidence threshold assumptions
  4. Test data not matching detection criteria
  5. Insufficient variance in test data
