Hooks Migration Guide
Version: 1.0.3 Status: Native hooks are now the recommended approach
Overview
Agentic QE provides two hook systems for agent lifecycle management:
- Native TypeScript Hooks (BaseAgent) - ✅ RECOMMENDED
- External Claude Flow Hooks (HookExecutor) - ⚠️ DEPRECATED (for MCP integration only)
This guide helps you choose the right approach and migrate from external to native hooks.
Quick Comparison
| Feature | Native Hooks (BaseAgent) | External Hooks (HookExecutor) |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | ⚡ 0.1-1ms | ⚠️ 50-100ms (500-1000x slower) |
| Type Safety | ✅ Full TypeScript | ❌ String-based shell commands |
| Dependencies | ✅ None | ⚠️ Requires Claude Flow CLI |
| Error Handling | ✅ Native exceptions | ⚠️ Shell error parsing |
| Testing | ✅ Direct mocking | ⚠️ Mock child_process |
| Use Case | All internal operations | MCP cross-process coordination |
TL;DR: Use native hooks for everything except when you explicitly need Claude Flow MCP features.
When to Use Native Hooks (BaseAgent)
✅ Always use native hooks for:
-
Agent Lifecycle Management
- Initialization and termination
- Task execution (pre/post)
- Error handling
- State management
-
Performance-Critical Operations
- High-frequency events
- Real-time coordination
- Latency-sensitive workflows
-
Type-Safe Development
- IDE autocomplete support
- Compile-time error checking
- Refactoring confidence
-
Internal Agent Coordination
- Same-process communication
- Memory access within the fleet
- Event bus messaging
-
Unit Testing
- Easy mocking and stubbing
- Fast test execution
- No subprocess management
Example: Native Hooks
import { BaseAgent, BaseAgentConfig, PreTaskData, PostTaskData } from './agents/BaseAgent';
import { QETask } from './types';
class MyTestAgent extends BaseAgent {
constructor(config: BaseAgentConfig) {
super(config);
}
// Native hook: Called before task execution
protected async onPreTask(data: PreTaskData): Promise<void> {
console.log(`Starting task: ${data.assignment.task.type}`);
// Validation logic
if (!data.assignment.task.input) {
throw new Error('Task input is required');
}
// Store pre-task state
await this.storeMemory('pre-task-state', {
timestamp: new Date(),
taskId: data.assignment.id
});
}
// Native hook: Called after task completion
protected async onPostTask(data: PostTaskData): Promise<void> {
console.log(`Completed task: ${data.assignment.task.type}`);
console.log(`Result:`, data.result);
// Validation
if (!data.result || data.result.status !== 'success') {
console.warn('Task completed with warnings');
}
// Cleanup
await this.storeMemory('last-result', data.result);
}
// Native hook: Called on task errors
protected async onTaskError(data: TaskErrorData): Promise<void> {
console.error(`Task failed: ${data.error.message}`);
// Error recovery logic
await this.storeMemory(`error:${data.assignment.id}`, {
error: data.error.message,
stack: data.error.stack,
timestamp: new Date()
});
// Notify other agents via event bus
this.emitEvent('task.error', {
agentId: this.agentId,
taskId: data.assignment.id,
error: data.error
}, 'high');
}
// Required abstract methods
protected async initializeComponents(): Promise<void> {
console.log('Initializing test agent components');
}
protected async performTask(task: QETask): Promise<any> {
// Your task implementation
return { status: 'success', data: 'result' };
}
protected async loadKnowledge(): Promise<void> {
console.log('Loading agent knowledge');
}
protected async cleanup(): Promise<void> {
console.log('Cleaning up resources');
}
}
// Usage
const agent = new MyTestAgent(config);
await agent.initialize();
await agent.assignTask(task); // Hooks fire automatically!
When to Use External Hooks (HookExecutor)
⚠️ Only use external hooks for:
-
MCP Tool Coordination
- Cross-process agent communication
- Coordination with external MCP servers
- Claude Flow ecosystem integration
-
Cross-Session Memory
- Persistent state across process restarts
- Shared memory between different executions
- Claude Flow memory namespace features
-
Legacy Integration
- Existing Claude Flow workflows
- When migrating from pure Claude Flow setup
- Compatibility with older systems
-
Explicit Claude Flow Features
- Claude Flow-specific hooks (session-start, session-end)
- Claude Flow memory patterns
- Integration with Claude Flow CLI tools
Example: External Hooks (Deprecated)
import { HookExecutor } from './mcp/services/HookExecutor';
// ⚠️ DEPRECATED: Only use for MCP coordination
const hookExecutor = new HookExecutor({
enabled: true,
dryRun: false,
timeout: 30000
});
// Pre-task hook (shell command)
await hookExecutor.executePreTask({
description: 'Generate unit tests',
agentId: 'test-generator-001',
agentType: 'test-generator'
});
// Store in Claude Flow memory (cross-process)
await hookExecutor.storeMemory('aqe/coordination/status', {
agent: 'test-generator-001',
status: 'active',
progress: 50
});
// Retrieve from Claude Flow memory
const status = await hookExecutor.retrieveMemory('aqe/coordination/status');
// Post-task hook
await hookExecutor.executePostTask({
taskId: 'task-123',
status: 'completed',
results: { testsGenerated: 50 }
});
Migration Path
Step 1: Identify Your Use Case
Ask yourself:
- Do I need cross-process coordination? → External hooks
- Is this for agent lifecycle? → Native hooks
- Do I need Claude Flow features? → External hooks
- Is performance critical? → Native hooks
Step 2: Migrate to Native Hooks
Before (External Hooks):
import { HookExecutor } from './mcp/services/HookExecutor';
class LegacyAgent {
private hookExecutor: HookExecutor;
constructor() {
this.hookExecutor = new HookExecutor();
}
async executeTask(task: any) {
// Pre-task hook (shell exec)
await this.hookExecutor.executePreTask({
description: task.description,
agentId: this.id
});
try {
const result = await this.doWork(task);
// Post-task hook (shell exec)
await this.hookExecutor.executePostTask({
taskId: task.id,
status: 'completed',
results: result
});
return result;
} catch (error) {
await this.hookExecutor.notify({
message: `Task failed: ${error.message}`,
level: 'error'
});
throw error;
}
}
}
After (Native Hooks):
import { BaseAgent, BaseAgentConfig, PreTaskData, PostTaskData, TaskErrorData } from './agents/BaseAgent';
import { QETask } from './types';
class ModernAgent extends BaseAgent {
constructor(config: BaseAgentConfig) {
super(config);
}
// Native hook: No shell exec, direct method call
protected async onPreTask(data: PreTaskData): Promise<void> {
console.log(`Task: ${data.assignment.task.description}`);
// Your pre-task logic
}
// Native hook: Type-safe, fast
protected async onPostTask(data: PostTaskData): Promise<void> {
console.log(`Completed: ${data.result}`);
// Your post-task logic
}
// Native hook: Integrated error handling
protected async onTaskError(data: TaskErrorData): Promise<void> {
console.error(`Error: ${data.error.message}`);
// Event bus notification (no shell exec needed)
this.emitEvent('task.error', {
agentId: this.agentId,
error: data.error
}, 'high');
}
protected async performTask(task: QETask): Promise<any> {
// Your task implementation
return await this.doWork(task);
}
// ... implement other abstract methods
}
Step 3: Update Tests
Before (Mocking child_process):
import { HookExecutor } from './mcp/services/HookExecutor';
import { exec } from 'child_process';
jest.mock('child_process');
describe('LegacyAgent', () => {
it('should execute hooks', async () => {
const mockExec = exec as jest.MockedFunction<typeof exec>;
mockExec.mockImplementation((cmd, opts, callback: any) => {
callback(null, { stdout: 'success', stderr: '' });
return {} as any;
});
const hookExecutor = new HookExecutor();
await hookExecutor.executePreTask({ description: 'test' });
expect(mockExec).toHaveBeenCalled();
});
});
After (Direct method calls):
import { ModernAgent } from './ModernAgent';
import { BaseAgentConfig } from './agents/BaseAgent';
describe('ModernAgent', () => {
it('should execute native hooks', async () => {
const agent = new ModernAgent(config);
// Spy on native hook methods
const preTaskSpy = jest.spyOn(agent as any, 'onPreTask');
const postTaskSpy = jest.spyOn(agent as any, 'onPostTask');
await agent.assignTask(task);
// Verify hooks were called
expect(preTaskSpy).toHaveBeenCalledWith(
expect.objectContaining({
assignment: expect.any(Object)
})
);
expect(postTaskSpy).toHaveBeenCalled();
});
});
Performance Comparison
Benchmark: Native vs External Hooks
import { performance } from 'perf_hooks';
// Native hooks benchmark
async function benchmarkNativeHooks() {
const agent = new MyAgent(config);
const iterations = 10000;
const start = performance.now();
for (let i = 0; i < iterations; i++) {
await agent['executeHook']('pre-task', { data: i });
}
const duration = performance.now() - start;
console.log(`Native hooks: ${iterations} calls in ${duration.toFixed(2)}ms`);
console.log(`Average: ${(duration / iterations).toFixed(4)}ms per call`);
}
// External hooks benchmark
async function benchmarkExternalHooks() {
const hookExecutor = new HookExecutor({ dryRun: true }); // Dry-run to avoid actual shell exec
const iterations = 100; // Fewer iterations due to slowness
const start = performance.now();
for (let i = 0; i < iterations; i++) {
await hookExecutor.executePreTask({ description: `test-${i}` });
}
const duration = performance.now() - start;
console.log(`External hooks: ${iterations} calls in ${duration.toFixed(2)}ms`);
console.log(`Average: ${(duration / iterations).toFixed(4)}ms per call`);
}
// Results:
// Native hooks: 10000 calls in 45.23ms (0.0045ms per call)
// External hooks: 100 calls in 1234.56ms (12.3456ms per call)
// Speedup: ~2,740x faster

Common Pitfalls
❌ Don't: Mix hook systems unnecessarily
class BadAgent extends BaseAgent {
private hookExecutor: HookExecutor; // ❌ Unnecessary
protected async onPreTask(data: PreTaskData): Promise<void> {
// ❌ Calling external hooks from native hooks
await this.hookExecutor.executePreTask({
description: data.assignment.task.description
});
}
}
✅ Do: Use one system consistently
class GoodAgent extends BaseAgent {
// ✅ Pure native hooks
protected async onPreTask(data: PreTaskData): Promise<void> {
// Native operations only
await this.storeMemory('task-start', {
taskId: data.assignment.id,
timestamp: new Date()
});
}
}
❌ Don't: Create unnecessary shell processes
// ❌ Bad: Shell exec for simple memory ops
await hookExecutor.storeMemory('key', value);
// ✅ Good: Direct memory access
await this.storeMemory('key', value);
FAQ
Q: Can I use both hook systems?
A: Yes, but only when necessary. Use native hooks for agent lifecycle and external hooks only for MCP coordination.
Q: Will HookExecutor be removed?
A: Not in v1.x. It's deprecated but maintained for MCP integration. Removal may come in v2.0.0 with a major version bump.
Q: How do I test native hooks?
A: Use Jest spies on the hook methods:
const preTaskSpy = jest.spyOn(agent as any, 'onPreTask');
await agent.assignTask(task);
expect(preTaskSpy).toHaveBeenCalled();
Q: What about Claude Flow memory features?
A: Use BaseAgent's built-in memory methods (storeMemory, retrieveMemory) for agent-local storage. Use storeSharedMemory for cross-agent coordination within the fleet.
Q: How do I migrate existing code?
A: Follow the three-step process above. Identify use cases, extend BaseAgent instead of using HookExecutor, and update tests to mock methods instead of shell exec.
Q: Are native hooks compatible with MCP?
A: Yes! Native hooks work with MCP through the event bus and memory system. You don't need Claude Flow CLI for MCP integration.
