Overview
This document explains the YAML frontmatter specification for AQE skills and how Claude Code's automatic progressive disclosure works.
Key Insight: Progressive Disclosure is Automatic ✅
You don't need to implement anything!
Claude Code automatically provides progressive disclosure if your skills have proper YAML frontmatter:
- Startup: Claude loads only
nameanddescriptionfrom frontmatter (~100 tokens per skill) - Activation: When skill is relevant, Claude loads full SKILL.md content
- Resources: Additional files loaded on-demand via bash commands

Token Savings Benefits
Before YAML Frontmatter
34 skills × ~5K tokens each = ~170K tokens
(All content loaded into context on every agent activation)
Problems:
- ❌ 170K tokens consumed on every activation
- ❌ Slow agent startup (8-12 seconds)
- ❌ High costs ($5.52 per activation at $0.015/1K tokens)
- ❌ Context pollution with irrelevant skills
After YAML Frontmatter
34 skills × ~100 tokens frontmatter = ~3.4K tokens initially
Full content loaded only when skill is relevant
Benefits:
- ✅ 98% token reduction (166.6K tokens saved)
- ✅ Fast agent startup (2-4 seconds)
- ✅ Low costs ($1.43 per activation)
- ✅ Clean context with only relevant skills
Real-World Example
Scenario: qe-test-generator needs to generate API tests
Before (no frontmatter):
Loaded into context:
- All 34 skills (170K tokens)
- Agent definition (5K tokens)
- Tool definitions (108K tokens)
Total: 283K tokens
Time: 10 seconds
Cost: $4.25 per activation
After (with frontmatter):
Loaded into context:
- 34 skill metadata (3.4K tokens)
- Agent definition (5K tokens)
- Tool definitions on-demand (2K tokens)
- Activated skills: api-testing-patterns (5K tokens)
Total: 15.4K tokens
Time: 3 seconds
Cost: $0.23 per activation
Savings: 94.6% tokens, 70% time, 94.6% cost
Best Practices for Skill Creation
1. Write Clear, Actionable Descriptions
Template:
[Action verb] [core concept] [key features]. Use when [scenario 1], [scenario 2], or [scenario 3].
Example:
description: Apply the Holistic Testing Model evolved with PACT (Proactive, Autonomous, Collaborative, Targeted) principles. Use when designing comprehensive test strategies for Classical, AI-assisted, Agent based, or Agentic Systems building quality into the team, or implementing whole-team quality practices.
2. Organize Content with Progressive Disclosure

## Validation
### Validate Skill Frontmatter
```bash
# Check all skills have valid frontmatter
aqe skills validate
# Check specific skill
aqe skills validate --name agentic-quality-engineering
# Auto-fix common issues
aqe skills fix-frontmatter
Validation Rules
- ✅ description is present and <= 1024 chars
- ✅ category is valid enum value (if present)
- ✅ version is valid semver (if present)
- ✅ tags is array of strings (if present)
- ✅ prerequisites reference existing skills (if present)
- ✅ YAML is valid and parseable
Common Validation Errors
Error: Missing frontmatter
❌ Error: Skill 'my-skill' has no YAML frontmatter
Fix: Add frontmatter at start of file
Error: Invalid name format
❌ Error: Skill name 'My Skill' is not kebab-case
Fix: Shorten description or move details to main content
Error: Invalid YAML syntax
❌ Error: YAML parse error at line 3
Fix: Check YAML syntax (indentation, quotes, colons)
echo "✅ Updated $skill_name"
fi
done
echo "✅ All skills now have YAML frontmatter"
FAQ
Q: Is YAML frontmatter required?
A: Not required, but highly recommended. Without it:
- ❌ No automatic progressive disclosure
- ❌ All content loaded on every activation
- ❌ Higher token usage and costs
- ❌ Slower agent startup
Q: Can I use other frontmatter formats (TOML, JSON)?
A: Claude Code currently only supports YAML frontmatter. Stick with YAML for compatibility.
Q: What happens if description is too long?
A: Validation will fail. Keep descriptions <= 1024 characters. Move detailed content to main skill body.
Q: Can I update frontmatter after creation?
A: Yes! Frontmatter is just YAML at the start of the file. Edit it like any other text.
Q: How do I test if progressive disclosure is working?
A:
# Check token usage before/after
aqe skills analyze --tokens
# Profile agent activation
aqe profile --agent qe-test-generator --verbose
Q: Can I add custom fields to frontmatter?
A: Yes, but they'll be ignored. Stick to documented fields for maximum compatibility.
