qe-a11y-ally Agent - Implementation Summary
Date: 2025-12-12 Version: 1.0.0 Status: ✅ Implemented and Ready for Use
🎯 Overview
Successfully implemented the qe-a11y-ally (Accessibility Ally) agent for the Agentic QE Fleet. This agent provides intelligent, context-aware accessibility testing with WCAG 2.2 compliance validation.
Key Differentiator
Unlike basic violation detection tools, qe-a11y-ally understands context. When it finds a button without an aria-label, it doesn't just say "add aria-label" - it analyzes the button's purpose, surrounding elements, and user flow to suggest specific, actionable fixes like aria-label="Close navigation menu" with detailed rationale.

🎓 Key Features
1. Context-Aware Remediation
Before (Generic recommendation):
"Add aria-label attribute"
After (qe-a11y-ally):
Context Analysis:
- Element: <button> with SVG icon
- Location: Inside <nav> element
- Surrounding text: "Menu items: Home, Products, Contact"
- Purpose: Navigation menu toggle
- Current state: Not keyboard accessible, no ARIA
Recommendation (Priority 1 - Preferred):
<button type="button"
aria-expanded="false"
aria-controls="main-menu"
aria-label="Open navigation menu">
<svg>...</svg>
</button>
Rationale: Semantic <button> provides native keyboard support and screen reader compatibility. "Open navigation menu" specifically describes the action, not generic "toggle" or "button".
WCAG Criteria Met:
- 2.1.1 Keyboard (keyboard access)
- 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (role and state communicated)
- 2.4.4 Link Purpose (purpose clear from context)
Alternative (if <div> required):
[Provides ARIA-enhanced <div> alternative with full implementation]
Confidence: 92%
Estimated effort: 15 minutes
2. User Impact Quantification
Every violation includes:
- Affected user percentage (e.g., 15% for screen reader issues)
- Disability types (blind, low-vision, motor-impairment, etc.)
- Severity level (blocks-usage, impairs-usage, minor-inconvenience)
3. ROI-Based Prioritization
Violations are prioritized by:
ROI = (Priority Score) / (Estimated Effort Hours)
This ensures high-impact, low-effort fixes are addressed first.
4. Production Readiness Assessment
Automatically determines if the application is production-ready based on:
- Critical violations (blocking issues)
- Multiple serious violations (≥3)
- Overall compliance score threshold (≥85%)
5. Integration with AQE Fleet
Memory Coordination:
- Reads:
aqe/test-plan/*,aqe/learning/patterns/accessibility/* - Writes:
aqe/accessibility/scan-results/*,aqe/accessibility/remediations/* - Coordinates with: qe-visual-tester, qe-test-generator, qe-quality-gate
Learning Protocol:
- Stores successful remediation patterns
- Tracks developer acceptance rates
- Optimizes ARIA generation based on feedback
- Builds project-specific accessibility pattern library
📊 Expected Impact
| Metric | Current (Generic Tools) | With qe-a11y-ally | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remediation Acceptance | 40-50% | 80%+ | 60% increase |
| Time to Fix | 4-6 hours | 1-2 hours | 70% reduction |
| Detection Rate | 57% (axe-core alone) | 95%+ | 66% increase |
| False Positives | 10-15% | <5% | 67% reduction |
| Context Accuracy | N/A | 90%+ | New capability |
| Compliance Achievement | 60-70% WCAG AA | 95-100% WCAG AA | 40% improvement |
