Security Fixes Implementation Summary
Date: 2025-10-23 Total Issues: 23 (22 Code Scanning + 1 Dependabot) Status: Ready for implementation
Overview
All security vulnerabilities have been identified and documented in docs/SECURITY-FIXES.md. This document provides the implementation roadmap.
Issues Identified
1. CRITICAL - Alert #22: Improper Code Sanitization
File: src/reasoning/TestTemplateCreator.ts:245 and :521
Problem: Constructs validation functions as strings and executes them via eval()
Current Code:
// Line 245 - creates string validator
validator: `(params) => ${JSON.stringify(params...)}.every(name => params[name] !== undefined)`
// Line 521 - executes with eval
const validator = eval(rule.validator);
Required Fix:
- Replace string-based validators with actual validator functions
- Store validation configuration data, not code
- Use predefined validator factory functions
2. HIGH - Alert #21: Prototype Pollution
File: src/cli/commands/config/set.ts:124
Problem: Recursive property assignment without prototype pollution guards
Required Fix:
- Add guards against
__proto__,constructor,prototypekeys - Use
Object.defineProperty()for safer assignment - Implement hasOwnProperty checks
3. MEDIUM - Alerts #18-20: Incomplete Sanitization
Files:
tests/simple-performance-test.js:545tests/performance-benchmark.ts:809tests/agents/DeploymentReadinessAgent.test.ts:36
Required Fix:
- Use global regex
/pattern/ginstead of string replace - Properly escape backslashes
- Use
replaceAll()for modern JS
4. HIGH - Alerts #14-17: Shell Command Injection
Files:
tests/test-claude-md-update.js:30, 73, 94security/secure-command-executor.js:128
Required Fix:
- Use
execFile()instead ofexec() - Validate paths against whitelist
- Remove shell metacharacter support
- Use
fsAPIs instead of shell commands where possible
5. MEDIUM - Alerts #1-13: Insecure Randomness (13 locations)
Files: All in src/mcp/handlers/quality/* and src/mcp/streaming/
Required Fix:
- Replace
Math.random()withcrypto.randomBytes()orcrypto.randomInt() - Create utility class
SecureRandomfor reusable secure random generation
6. MEDIUM - Dependabot Alert #1: validator.js CVE
Package: validator <= 13.15.15
CVE: CVE-2025-56200
Required Fix:
- Update to latest version:
npm update validator - Or use alternative: native
URL()constructor for validation
Implementation Checklist
Phase 1: Critical Fixes (Priority 1)
- Create
src/utils/SecureValidation.tswith safe validator factory - Update
src/types/pattern.types.tsValidationRule interface - Refactor
TestTemplateCreator.ts:245to use safe validators - Remove
eval()fromTestTemplateCreator.ts:521 - Add prototype pollution guards to
config/set.ts:124 - Add unit tests for fixes
Phase 2: High Priority Fixes (Priority 2)
- Fix shell command injection in 4 files
- Create secure path validator utility
- Replace
exec()withexecFile()orfsAPIs - Add unit tests for command execution security
Phase 3: Medium Priority Fixes (Priority 3)
- Create
src/utils/SecureRandom.tsutility - Replace all 13 instances of
Math.random() - Fix 3 incomplete sanitization issues
- Update validator.js package
- Add unit tests for random generation
Phase 4: Verification & Documentation
- Run CodeQL scan to verify fixes
- Run
npm auditto verify dependency fixes - Update SECURITY.md with mitigation details
- Create PR with all fixes
- Request security review
Implementation Notes
For Alert #22 (Code Sanitization)
New Approach: Instead of storing validators as code strings, store validation metadata:
// NEW: ValidationRule interface (secure)
export interface ValidationRule {
id: string;
description: string;
type: 'required' | 'type-check' | 'range' | 'pattern' | 'custom';
config: ValidationConfig;
severity: 'error' | 'warning' | 'info';
}
export interface ValidationConfig {
requiredParams?: string[];
typeChecks?: Record<string, string>;
rangeChecks?: Record<string, { min?: number; max?: number }>;
patternChecks?: Record<string, RegExp>;
customValidatorId?: string; // Reference to predefined validator
}
// Secure validator factory
export class SecureValidation {
static validate(rule: ValidationRule, params: Record<string, any>): boolean {
switch (rule.type) {
case 'required':
return rule.config.requiredParams!.every(name => params[name] !== undefined);
case 'type-check':
return Object.entries(rule.config.typeChecks!).every(([name, type]) =>
typeof params[name] === type
);
// ... other validators
}
}
}

Testing Strategy
Unit Tests Required:
// tests/security/SecureValidation.test.ts
describe('SecureValidation', () => {
it('validates required params without eval', () => {
const rule: ValidationRule = {
id: 'req-params',
type: 'required',
config: { requiredParams: ['name', 'age'] },
...
};
expect(SecureValidation.validate(rule, { name: 'John' })).toBe(false);
expect(SecureValidation.validate(rule, { name: 'John', age: 30 })).toBe(true);
});
it('prevents code injection attacks', () => {
const malicious = { '__proto__': { isAdmin: true } };
expect(() => SecureValidation.validate(rule, malicious)).not.toThrow();
expect(({} as any).isAdmin).toBeUndefined();
});
});
// tests/security/SecureRandom.test.ts
describe('SecureRandom', () => {
it('generates cryptographically secure IDs', () => {
const id1 = SecureRandom.generateId();
const id2 = SecureRandom.generateId();
expect(id1).not.toBe(id2);
expect(id1).toMatch(/^[a-f0-9]{32}$/);
});
});
