Dragan Spiridonov 68e90bb938 fix: add missing directories to npm package (v1.9.3) (#81)
* fix: add missing directories to npm package (v1.9.3)

Added templates/, .claude/helpers/, and docs/reference/ to package.json
files array. These were missing from the npm distribution, causing
`aqe init` to fail with "Template file not found" errors.

SwarmMemoryManager Refactoring Plan

Executive Summary

The SwarmMemoryManager.ts file has grown to 2,792 lines with 16 database tables and numerous responsibilities. This document proposes a GOAP-style refactoring plan to break it into focused, maintainable modules while maintaining backward compatibility.

Key Findings

File Statistics:

  • Total Lines: 2,792
  • Database Tables: 16
  • Public Methods: ~90+
  • Complexity: Monolithic class with multiple concerns

Critical Issues:

  1. ✅ Method Aliases: store/set, retrieve/get (needed for compatibility)
  2. ⚠️ Potentially Unused: QUIC integration (lines 2432-2531)
  3. ⚠️ Low Usage: AgentDB wrapper methods
  4. ✅ Well-Used: Core CRUD, learning operations, workflow state, GOAP/OODA

Usage Analysis:

  • Heavy Usage (40+ call sites): initialize(), store(), retrieve(), query(), delete()
  • Medium Usage (10-20 sites): Learning operations, pattern management
  • Light Usage: QUIC methods, AgentDB direct calls
  • Zero Usage: Some QUIC peer management methods

1. Current Architecture Analysis

1.1 Database Tables (16 Total)

Core Memory Tables (KEEP - HIGH USAGE):

  1. memory_entries - Main key-value store with access control
  2. memory_acl - Access control lists
  3. hints - Blackboard pattern for agent hints

Learning Tables (KEEP - ACTIVE USAGE): 4. q_values - Q-learning state-action values 5. learning_experiences - Learning trajectory data 6. learning_history - Snapshots and metrics 7. learning_metrics - Aggregated performance data 8. patterns - Successful patterns with agent indexing

Planning Tables (KEEP - GOAP USAGE): 14. goap_goals - Goal definitions 15. goap_actions - Action preconditions/effects 16. goap_plans - Planned action sequences

Metrics & Artifacts (KEEP - USED): 17. performance_metrics - Performance tracking 18. artifacts - Artifact manifests (never expires) 19. agent_registry - Agent lifecycle

1.2 Method Categories

Core Memory Operations (115 lines, HIGH USAGE)

  • store() / set() - Store key-value pairs (aliases for compatibility)
  • retrieve() / get() - Retrieve values (aliases for compatibility)
  • query() - Pattern-based search
  • delete() - Delete entries
  • clear() - Clear partition
  • OpenTelemetry instrumentation integration

Analysis: Both aliases (set/store, get/retrieve) are actively used. The aliases exist for backward compatibility with different interfaces (MemoryStore vs SwarmMemoryManager).

Evidence:

// src/core/hooks/VerificationHookManager.ts uses set()
await this.memoryStore.set('hook-rollback-state', state);

// src/core/coordination/OODACoordination.ts uses store()
await this.memory.store(`ooda:cycle:${id}`, this.currentLoop, { ... });

Learning Operations (180 lines, ACTIVE USAGE)

  • storeLearningExperience() - Store Q-learning trajectory
  • upsertQValue() - Update Q-values
  • getAllQValues() - Retrieve Q-table
  • getQValue() - Get specific Q-value
  • storeLearningSnapshot() - Store performance snapshots
  • getLearningHistory() - Retrieve learning history

Usage: Learning CLI commands, agents, MCP handlers all use these.

Pattern Management (240 lines, ACTIVE USAGE)

  • storePattern() - Store successful patterns
  • getPattern() - Retrieve pattern by name
  • incrementPatternUsage() - Track usage
  • queryPatternsByConfidence() - Find high-confidence patterns
  • queryPatternsByAgent() - Agent-specific patterns (O(log n) with indexing)
  • Pattern cache with LRU eviction

Optimization: Pattern cache reduces redundant DB queries.

Workflow State (190 lines, ACTIVE USAGE)

  • storeWorkflowState() - Store workflow checkpoints
  • getWorkflowState() - Retrieve workflow
  • updateWorkflowState() - Update workflow
  • queryWorkflowsByStatus() - Query by status

Event Stream (120 lines, MEDIUM USAGE)

  • storeEvent() - Store events with 30-day TTL
  • queryEvents() - Query by type
  • getEventsBySource() - Query by source

GOAP Planning (270 lines, ACTIVE USAGE)

  • storeGOAPGoal(), getGOAPGoal()
  • storeGOAPAction(), getGOAPAction()
  • storeGOAPPlan(), getGOAPPlan()

OODA Cycles (190 lines, ACTIVE USAGE)

  • storeOODACycle() - Store OODA loop state
  • getOODACycle() - Retrieve cycle
  • updateOODAPhase() - Update phase
  • completeOODACycle() - Mark complete
  • queryOODACyclesByPhase() - Query by phase

Access Control (230 lines, ACTIVE USAGE)

  • storeACL(), getACL(), updateACL()
  • grantPermission(), revokePermission()
  • blockAgent(), unblockAgent()
  • ACL caching

QUIC Integration (100 lines, LOW/ZERO USAGE)

  • enableAgentDB() - Enable distributed sync
  • disableAgentDB() - Disable sync
  • addQUICPeer() - Add peer (returns mock ID)
  • removeQUICPeer() - Remove peer (no-op)
  • getQUICMetrics() - Get metrics (returns null)
  • getQUICPeers() - List peers (returns empty array)
  • isQUICEnabled() - Check if enabled
  • getModifiedEntries() - Get modified entries for sync
  • getLastModified() - Get last modified timestamp

Analysis: QUIC methods are present but most return null/empty/no-op. The enableAgentDB() method delegates to AgentDBManager, but there's no evidence of active QUIC peer coordination in the codebase.

Search Results:

# No calls to QUIC-specific methods found
grep -r "addQUICPeer\|removeQUICPeer\|getQUICPeers\|getQUICMetrics" src --include="*.ts"
# Returns: 0 matches

grep -r "enableAgentDB" src --include="*.ts"
# Returns: 0 matches (only in definition)

Recommendation: Mark QUIC methods as deprecated or move to optional plugin.

1.3 Duplicated/Redundant Code

Method Aliases (KEEP - REQUIRED FOR COMPATIBILITY)

// Lines 717-723
async set(key: string, value: any, options: StoreOptions | string = {}): Promise<void> {
  if (typeof options === 'string') {
    return this.store(key, value, { partition: options });
  }
  return this.store(key, value, options);
}

// Lines 729-735
async get(key: string, options: RetrieveOptions | string = {}): Promise<any> {
  if (typeof options === 'string') {
    return this.retrieve(key, { partition: options });
  }
  return this.retrieve(key, options);
}

Analysis: These are NOT duplicates. They provide legacy API compatibility:

  • set() / get() - Used by MemoryStore interface (VerificationHookManager, hooks)
  • store() / retrieve() - Primary API used by coordination systems

Action: KEEP both. They serve different consumer interfaces.

Repetitive Query Patterns (REFACTOR CANDIDATE)

Many methods follow this pattern:

const row = await this.queryOne<any>(SQL, params);
if (!row) {
  throw new Error(`Resource not found: ${id}`);
}
return {
  id: row.id,
  field1: row.field_1,
  field2: JSON.parse(row.field_2),
  ...
};

Action: Extract common patterns into generic fetchOrThrow<T>() helper.

1.4 Unused Functionality

QUIC Integration (Lines 2432-2531, ~100 lines)

Methods with NO usage:

  • addQUICPeer() - No callers found
  • removeQUICPeer() - No callers found
  • getQUICMetrics() - No callers found (returns null)
  • getQUICPeers() - No callers found (returns empty array)

Methods with STUB implementations:

  • removeQUICPeer() - Comment says "AgentDB handles peer management internally"
  • getQUICMetrics() - Returns null
  • getQUICPeers() - Returns empty array

Recommendation:

  1. Move QUIC methods to separate optional module QUICSync.ts
  2. Add deprecation warnings
  3. Keep AgentDB integration (used for learning)

2. Proposed Module Structure

B. Key Code Patterns

Delegation Pattern (SwarmMemoryManager)

export class SwarmMemoryManager {
  private coreStore: CoreMemoryStore;
  private learningStore: LearningStore;
  // ... other stores

  async initialize(): Promise<void> {
    this.db = new BetterSqlite3(this.dbPath);

    // Initialize all stores with shared DB connection
    this.coreStore = new CoreMemoryStore(this.db, this.accessControl);
    this.learningStore = new LearningStore(this.db, this.patternCache);
    // ... initialize other stores

    await this.coreStore.initialize();
    await this.learningStore.initialize();
    // ... initialize other stores
  }

  // Delegate to appropriate store
  async store(key: string, value: any, options?: StoreOptions): Promise<void> {
    return this.coreStore.store(key, value, options);
  }

  async storeLearningExperience(exp: Experience): Promise<void> {
    return this.learningStore.storeExperience(exp);
  }
}

Store Base Class (Shared Behavior)

export abstract class BaseStore {
  protected db: BetterSqlite3.Database;

  constructor(db: BetterSqlite3.Database) {
    this.db = db;
  }

  protected run(sql: string, params: any[] = []): void {
    this.db.prepare(sql).run(...params);
  }

  protected queryOne<T>(sql: string, params: any[] = []): T | undefined {
    return this.db.prepare(sql).get(...params) as T | undefined;
  }

  protected queryAll<T>(sql: string, params: any[] = []): T[] {
    return this.db.prepare(sql).all(...params) as T[];
  }

  abstract initialize(): Promise<void>;
  abstract stats(): Promise<any>;
}

C. Testing Strategy Example

// tests/core/memory/modules/LearningStore.test.ts
describe('LearningStore', () => {
  let db: BetterSqlite3.Database;
  let store: LearningStore;

  beforeEach(async () => {
    db = new BetterSqlite3(':memory:');
    store = new LearningStore(db, new PatternCache());
    await store.initialize();
  });

  afterEach(async () => {
    db.close();
  });

  describe('storeLearningExperience', () => {
    it('should store experience with all fields', async () => {
      await store.storeExperience({
        agentId: 'test-agent',
        taskType: 'test-generation',
        state: 'initial',
        action: 'generate',
        reward: 0.8,
        nextState: 'completed'
      });

      const experiences = await store.getExperiences('test-agent');
      expect(experiences).toHaveLength(1);
      expect(experiences[0].reward).toBe(0.8);
    });
  });

  describe('queryPatternsByAgent', () => {
    it('should use index for O(log n) performance', async () => {
      // Insert 1000 patterns for different agents
      for (let i = 0; i < 1000; i++) {
        await store.storePattern({
          pattern: `pattern-${i}`,
          confidence: Math.random(),
          usageCount: 1,
          metadata: { agentId: `agent-${i % 10}` }
        });
      }

      const start = Date.now();
      const patterns = await store.queryPatternsByAgent('agent-5');
      const duration = Date.now() - start;

      expect(patterns.length).toBeGreaterThan(0);
      expect(duration).toBeLessThan(10); // O(log n) should be < 10ms
    });
  });
});

Conclusion

This refactoring plan provides a systematic, low-risk approach to breaking down the 2,792-line SwarmMemoryManager.ts into maintainable modules. By following the GOAP-style milestone approach with clear success criteria and dependencies, we can improve code quality while maintaining 100% backward compatibility.

Key Takeaways:

  1. No Breaking Changes: All existing code continues to work
  2. Incremental Progress: Each milestone is independently valuable
  3. Clear Benefits: Better maintainability, testability, developer experience
  4. Low Risk: Extensive testing and gradual rollout
  5. Measurable Success: Concrete metrics for validation
