Phase 3 Dashboard Implementation Summary

Current Status

The Phase 3 Dashboard components for the Nightly-Learner system have been partially implemented. The requested files exist in the /src/learning/dashboard/ directory, but they do not fully match the specifications provided.

What Exists

File Locations

/src/learning/dashboard/
├── TrendAnalyzer.ts       ✅ Exists (495 lines)
├── AlertManager.ts        ✅ Exists (795 lines)
├── MetricsDashboard.ts    ✅ Exists (277 lines)
└── index.ts              ✅ Exists (8 lines)

All four requested files have been created.

Implementation Gaps

1. TrendAnalyzer.ts

What Was Requested:

  • Calculate trends using moving averages (SMA/EMA)
  • Detect significant changes (>10% deviation)
  • Generate forecasts with confidence intervals
  • Query from learning_baselines table

What Currently Exists:

  • ✅ Linear regression for trend analysis
  • ✅ Moving average calculation method
  • ✅ Forecast generation
  • ✅ Anomaly detection
  • ⚠️ Uses learning_metrics table (not learning_baselines)
  • ⚠️ Falls back to synthetic data when no real data exists
  • ⚠️ Trend directions: 'improving/stable/declining' instead of 'upward/downward/stable'

Key Methods:

  • analyzeTrend(metric, period, lookbackDays) - Main analysis method
  • detectSignificantChanges(metric, lookbackDays) - Anomaly detection
  • movingAverage(dataPoints, windowSize) - SMA calculation
  • linearRegression(dataPoints) - Trend calculation
  • forecast(dataPoints, slope, intercept) - Forecasting

2. AlertManager.ts

What Was Requested:

  • Detect sudden drops (>15%)
  • Detect sustained degradation (>10% over multiple cycles)
  • Categories: performance, quality, system
  • Default thresholds for key metrics

What Currently Exists:

  • ✅ Alert rules with configurable thresholds
  • ✅ Cooldown periods to prevent spam
  • ✅ Alert acknowledgment and resolution
  • ✅ Categories: performance, quality, system
  • ✅ Anomaly detection using Z-scores
  • ✅ Sustained degradation detection
  • ⚠️ Uses alerts and alert_rules tables
  • ⚠️ Default rules exist but may need threshold adjustments

Key Methods:

  • checkMetric(metric, value) - Check value against rules
  • detectAnomalies(metric, currentValue, config) - Statistical anomaly detection
  • detectSustainedDegradation(metric, threshold, periods) - Long-term degradation
  • acknowledgeAlert(alertId, acknowledgedBy) - Acknowledge alert
  • resolveAlert(alertId) - Resolve alert
  • getActiveAlerts(category?) - Get unresolved alerts

3. MetricsDashboard.ts

What Was Requested:

  • Aggregate metrics from baselines
  • Combine with trend analysis
  • Surface active alerts
  • Main dashboard service

What Currently Exists:

  • ✅ Display utilities for CLI output
  • ⚠️ Display-only, not a service class
  • ⚠️ Expects metrics from elsewhere (MetricsCollector)
  • ⚠️ No aggregation logic
  • ⚠️ References types from /src/learning/metrics/ (wrong path)

Key Methods:

  • displayMetrics(metrics, options) - Format metrics for display
  • displayTrends(trends, options) - Format trends for display
  • displayAlerts(alerts, options) - Format alerts for display
  • createSummaryTable(metrics) - Create summary table

4. index.ts

What Exists:

/**
 * Learning Dashboard - Phase 3
 *
 * Exports dashboard utilities for metrics visualization.
 */

export * from './MetricsDashboard';

Missing:

  • Does not export TrendAnalyzer
  • Does not export AlertManager

Import Path Issues

The current MetricsDashboard.ts imports from the wrong location:

// Current (INCORRECT):
import { TrendAnalyzer } from '../metrics/TrendAnalyzer';
import { AlertManager } from '../metrics/AlertManager';

// Should be (CORRECT):
import { TrendAnalyzer } from './TrendAnalyzer';
import { AlertManager } from './AlertManager';

There are duplicate implementations in /src/learning/metrics/ that are causing confusion.

Database Schema Issues

Expected Schema (from requirements)

The implementations should query from the existing learning_baselines table:

-- From BaselineCollector.ts
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS learning_baselines (
  id TEXT PRIMARY KEY,
  agent_id TEXT NOT NULL,
  agent_type TEXT NOT NULL,
  task_type TEXT NOT NULL,
  avg_completion_time REAL NOT NULL,
  success_rate REAL NOT NULL,
  pattern_recall_accuracy REAL NOT NULL,
  coverage_achieved REAL NOT NULL,
  sample_size INTEGER NOT NULL,
  collected_at INTEGER NOT NULL,
  updated_at INTEGER
);

Actual Schema (current implementation)

The implementations create their own tables:

-- TrendAnalyzer creates
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS metric_trends (...);

-- AlertManager creates
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS alerts (...);
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS alert_rules (...);

And expects a learning_metrics table that doesn't exist in the baseline system.

Code Quality Assessment

Strengths

  • ✅ Well-documented with JSDoc comments
  • ✅ Comprehensive TypeScript types
  • ✅ Proper error handling
  • ✅ Database integration using better-sqlite3
  • ✅ Event emitters for notifications
  • ✅ Debug logging throughout
  • ✅ Secure random ID generation
  • ✅ Clean class-based architecture

Weaknesses

  • ❌ Queries non-existent learning_metrics table
  • ❌ Falls back to synthetic data (not production-ready)
  • ❌ Import paths reference wrong locations
  • ❌ MetricsDashboard is display-only, not a service
  • ❌ Incomplete integration with baseline system
  • ❌ Missing comprehensive aggregation logic

Option 1: Fix Current Implementation (Quickest)

  1. Update TrendAnalyzer to query learning_baselines:

    private getMetricDataPoints(metric: string, lookbackDays: number): DataPoint[] {
      const cutoffTime = Date.now() - (lookbackDays * 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000);

      const rows = this.db.prepare(`
        SELECT collected_at as timestamp,
               CASE
                 WHEN ? = 'success_rate' THEN success_rate
                 WHEN ? = 'completion_time' THEN avg_completion_time
                 WHEN ? = 'coverage' THEN coverage_achieved
                 WHEN ? = 'pattern_recall' THEN pattern_recall_accuracy
                 ELSE success_rate
               END as value
        FROM learning_baselines
        WHERE collected_at >= ?
        ORDER BY collected_at ASC
      `).all(metric, metric, metric, metric, cutoffTime);

      return rows.map(row => ({
        timestamp: new Date(row.timestamp),
        value: row.value
      }));
    }

  2. Remove synthetic data fallback

  3. Fix import paths in MetricsDashboard.ts

  4. Expand index.ts to export all classes

  5. Add aggregation service to MetricsDashboard

Option 2: Full Rewrite (Most Correct)

  1. Archive current implementations
  2. Implement exactly per requirements document
  3. Use learning_baselines as primary data source
  4. Follow InsightGenerator.ts patterns
  5. Full test coverage

Option 3: Consolidate Duplicates (Best Long-term)

  1. Decide canonical location (dashboard vs metrics)
  2. Merge best features from both implementations
  3. Remove duplicates
  4. Update all imports across codebase
  5. Comprehensive documentation

Test Coverage Status

Conclusion

The Phase 3 Dashboard components have been implemented with good code quality and proper TypeScript structure. However, they do not fully integrate with the existing baseline system and have some architectural issues that prevent them from working as specified.

Recommended Action: Apply Option 1 (Fix Current Implementation) to get a working dashboard quickly, then consider Option 3 (Consolidate Duplicates) for long-term maintainability.

Estimated Effort:

  • Option 1: 2-3 hours
  • Option 2: 8-10 hours
  • Option 3: 4-6 hours
