Loop 026

The Infinite Clickbait loop

A thumbnail ideation workflow that generates ten concepts, scores the strongest candidates, and iterates until the winning image is click-baity enough.

Ready-to-use prompt

Copy the loop

The video is about [video subject]. Using [assets], make ten thumbnail concepts and score each one against [inspiration channel]'s YouTube thumbnails using a consistent rubric: clarity at small size, curiosity, emotional pull, visual contrast, and accuracy to the video. Select the top three, identify the weakest part of each concept, improve them, and rescore them with the same rubric. Continue iterating the strongest concept until you're satisfied it's click-baity enough without promising something the video does not deliver. Return the winning concept, two runners-up, their final scores, and the reasoning behind the choice.

Verify / stop

You are satisfied the winning thumbnail is click-baity enough.

The winner outperforms the alternatives on the fixed rubric, remains legible at thumbnail size, and accurately represents the video.

Use this when

Use this when a video topic and asset set are ready but the thumbnail needs several structured ideation and critique rounds before production.

How to run it

  1. Define the video subject, available assets, inspiration channel, and a fixed five-part scoring rubric.
  2. Create ten distinct thumbnail concepts, inspect them at realistic YouTube sizes, and score each one.
  3. Select the top three, improve the weakest dimension of each, and rescore them under the same conditions.
  4. Keep iterating the strongest concept until it is click-baity enough, then return the winner, runners-up, scores, and rationale.

Why it works

Generating a wide first set creates real options, while a fixed rubric makes later rounds comparable. Keeping accuracy in the score prevents curiosity from drifting into a promise the video cannot keep.

Implementation note

Choose an inspiration channel whose audience and visual language are relevant. Evaluate the actual thumbnail crop at desktop and mobile sizes, and reject concepts that misrepresent the video's substance.
