Normal CLI/watch and daemon indexing use the direct writer, not the prototype shard builder. Prepare seven real-file regressions through its public build entry points and extend the existing independent harness to extract those exact methods. Require two parent failures proving main-file deletion, with and without pending WAL, then all 32 component tests GREEN before the source-only runtime commit. The reviewed fix removes caller-owned deletion of a destination the buffered engine writer has not replaced and preserves typed causes with anyhow context. No source is silently substituted, no dependency pin changed, and no full CLI/model/RCH/UBS pass is claimed.
