While effective, `preservePlaceholders` unfortunately is not viable in google3 at the moment due to some complexities with how TC extracts messages. Therefore this feature is being removed in favor of whitespace trimming of expressions, which is viable for TC and provides most of the same benefit.
This is a partial revert of dab722f9c8.
PR Close#58176
This configures whether or not to preserve whitespace content when extracting messages from Angular templates in the legacy (View Engine) extraction pipeline.
This includes several bug fixes which unfortunately cannot be landed without changing message IDs in a breaking fashion and are necessary to properly trim whitespace. Instead these bug fixes are included only when the new flag is disabled.
PR Close#56507
When blocks were initially implemented, they were represented as containers in the i18n AST. This is problematic, because block affect the structure of the message.
These changes introduce a new `BlockPlaceholder` AST node and integrate it into the i18n pipeline. With the new node blocks are represented with the `START_BLOCK_<name>` and `CLOSE_BLOCK_<name>` placeholders.
PR Close#52958
A lot of our tests are wrapped in `{}` which serves no purpose, aside from increasing the nesting level and, in some cases, causing confusion. The braces appear to be a leftover from a time when all tests were wrapped in a `function main() {}`. The function declaration was removed in #21053, but the braces remained, presumably because it was easier to search&replace for `function main()`, but not to remove the braces at the same time.
PR Close#52239
Previously, localized strings had very limited or incorrect source-mapping
information available.
Now the i18n AST nodes and related output AST nodes include source-span
information about message-parts and placeholders - including closing tag
placeholders.
This information is then used when generating the final localized string
ASTs to ensure that the correct source-mapping is rendered.

PR Close#38645
The `TagPlaceholder` can contain children, in which case there are two source
spans of interest: the opening tag and the closing tag. This commit now allows
the closing tag source-span to be tracked, so that it can be used later in
source-mapping.
PR Close#38645
The parser was accidentally reading the `target` tag
below the `alt-trans` target and overriding the correct
`target` tag.
(This already worked in `$localize` but a test has been
added to confirm.)
Fixes#33161
PR Close#33450
Update XMB placeholders(<ph>) to include the original value on top of an
example. Placeholders can by definition have one example(<ex>) tag and a
text node. The text node is used by TC as the "original" value from the
placeholder, while the example should represent a dummy value.
For example: <ph name="PET"><ex>Gopher</ex>{{ petName }}</ph>.
This change makes sure that we have the original text, but it *DOES NOT*
make sure that the example is correct. The example has the same wrong
behavior of showing the interpolation text rather than a useful
example.
No breaking changes, but tools that depend on the previous behavior and
don't consider the full XMB definition may fail to parse the XMB.

Add source location as a note tag as `<note category="location">path/to/file.ts:start_line[,end_line]</note>`.
`[,end_line]` part is optional and specified only if the end line is different from the start line.
Fixes #16531
- Ensure that the result passes OASIS XLIFF 2.0 schema validation
- Use <ph/> for self-closing placeholder tags
- Use <pc></pc> for other placeholder tags
- Check for the correct XLIFF file version
- Add ICU support
